I don't think so. I put one in the bridge position of my 550 and it really opened up the guitar. Its a really well-balanced pickup, with a little less bass than say a tone zone. Excellent for soloing, it cuts the mix really well. Also, i can get killer harmonics out of it very easily. More so than most other pickups i've played. It distorts nicely, and is fairly powerful, just a little less than a super distortion. IMO, it is very crisp, not at all muddy, and cleans up pretty nicely.

When i put it in, however, I removed the tone control from the signal path, so the presence of such a control in your guitar could open up a few more tonal possibilities.

I love the Evo in the bridge position, but I found it to be a bit too brash in the neck position.

Yes, I agree. I opted not to throw a neck evo in my guitar, maybe a PAF or humbucker from hell.

big h: clean, it is very crisp and punchy, and fairly trebly. When i play clean, I usually switch to the stock neck p/u because it is a little warmer sounding, but if i actually had a tone pot in my guitar, i think i could roll off some of the highs. When playing with effects clean though, i usually use the evo. Coil-tapped, it sounds great too.

I'm not great at explaining these things, but DiMarzio does a great job of describing their pickups, and i think this is a very accurate description.
From DiMarzio website: The sound is tight, aggressive and loud. The Evolution® bridge pickup works best for soloing where the sound must cut through. Low notes are very tight, and the highs have a lot of presence, enabling the pickup to be heard in almost any situation. Obviously, the Evolution® was designed for Steve's Ibanez Jems, but it can add a lot of punch and definition to Les Pauls and similar set-neck guitars - even the lowest bass notes really jump out of the amp, and feedback occurs easily with a wide range of harmonic overtones.

Hope this helps

How about a EVO in the bridge and a FRED in the neck of a JEM?? Would they go good together? Anybody have a FRED in the neck of a JEM??

How does a FRED sound clean compared to an Evo (bridge) ?

Just another question, what about clarity when it comes to distortion for the FRED pickup.

I'm looking for a Satriani type of tone but also versatile enough for metal and heavier stuff.

Thanks

What are the Evo's midrange qualities like?

And does the Evolution 7 sound like the six-string version?

The Evo7 is good - they re-EQed it to accomodate for the low B, but it's still pretty well interchangable with the 6 string version.

Thanks, kennydoe.
But yeah, what are the Evo 7's midrange qualities like? I'm trying to decide between an Evo 7 or Blaze and basically I'm looking for whichever one has more mids.

Hehe, plus those two are the only seven-string pickups available in custom colours, according to the website I wanna get black coils on the outside and red on the inside, to match the hideously clashing red clip-lock strap on my Magenta Crush 7420. Hehehe.

Evo7s definitely have more mids than the blazes.

I'll kick in my observations here....that and a nickel will get you a nickel.

I can only comment on the evos in my 7vwh...It all depends on what sound you are after. I am trying to get a super super thick tone that you can just "feel" and the evos are just too hot for that. They are pretty harsh if you ask me. In the neck position I think its great, but the bridge is just too much gain. For certain tones it is absolutely perfect and they cut through like crazy and for that reason I'll leave them in this guitar and relegate it for when those tones are needed specifically. My tastes are of a more fat variety (tones, not women) so I'm looking to pickup another axe and throw some PAF Pros in it or try to find a nice clean BFP as a main player ( I love maple necks).

Just offering a dissenting view....
