Evos + maple neck

Hey, I was wondering how a pair of evos in a RG550xx would sound. Would it be too, I dunno, punchy? See I want to change the pick ups and so far I have seen people love AN/TZ, a pair of Breeds, I hear a PAF Pro + FRED is good too, And the pair of PAF Pros sounds liek a good idea. I like Steve vai's tone, btu at teh same time I like Joe Satrianni's. Then I also love Paul Gilberts and John Petrucci's tone, especially after hearing them in concert for G3. So what would be an extremely versatile pair, ranging from crushing metal to mellow jazz? The PAF's seem to be amazing, but I just don't know, any help?

The pickups being replaced are for a RGX RFR 20th, if that helps at all. Thanks.

u like 4 diff ppl who have 4 unique styles. Most of it is in your hands. I think the AN/TZ or PAF Pros would be your most versatile set.

I know, which is part of the 'problem'. I was wondering which type would give me a sorta similar sound. And the 'its in your hands' is a different topic all together, that's more of how someone would play and the inflection. Regardless of how you play, gear does play a factor. The best damn playing in the world may not come a cross so well if the gear is just plain ****.

I thought those two would have a pretty wide tone capabilities, but without any real experience with them, thanks for the help.

if you´re looking for overall versatility, i´d say paf-type pickups are the right way to go... look around on the dimarzio site, maybe use the pickup selector tool-thingy on their site, it works pretty well, really...

i´m pretty interested in either a D Activator or a D sonic in the pridge, and i play alot of different types of music... they´re both a little more metal-oriented, and high output, but they can be used for alot of different purposes...

I have a pair of evos in a rg20th rfr with a tz single in the middle.I personally really like it.Its not shrill like I thought it would be.It does cut through in the mix real well. The evos have a lot of clarity to them. The tz single is basically another humbucker and it sounds very warm yet usable in the middle position. It depends what type of equipment you play through.I don't think you could go wrong with any of the combos you mentioned.I also like the stock pickups in the rg20th.I just like to experiment.

Norton is a cross between a TZ/Fred and a pretty damn nice pickup, that and PAF Pro and you could cover just about anything

ATM I have the D-sonic in the Bridge of a 1570 paired with Fred in the neck (not totally as thick as AN but not totally PAF Pro) I like the bar towards the bridge ( smooth even almost Evo2 response) as the other way is alil to Steves Special for me ( bright and definite seperation) lol; although I flip it back n forth to suit my whim for the week

Re: Evos + maple neck

For versatility you should go for Norton in the bridge; from DiMarzio website: "... The sound of a Norton is right between FRED and The Tone Zone. ..."
"... Norton might be our most versatile bridge pickup. ..."
"... Combine it with a wide choice of neck pickups like the Air Classic, PAF, PAF Pro and Air Norton. ..."

So if I were in your shoes I would go with a PAF Pro/Norton combo
