Gibson classic 57's

Hey - I was thinking of replacing the pups on a Sheraton II and wondering if there were any inexpensive pickups out there similar to the Gibson classic 57's. I mean those go for ~150 cdn and the guitar is only worth ~500. Any alternatives would be considered as well . . .

I don't know much Dimarzios go for up there but I'd definitely check out the Dimarzio 36th Anniversary PAFs. I just put a set in my LP Classic and they sound amazing. It's the LP sound I've been looking for my whole life. Not too bright, not too bassy, not too weak and not too hot. All the reviews I've read on them are good.

BTW, I wouldn't necessarily compare the cost of replacement pickups with the original cost of the stock guitar. You can keep the original pickups so if you ever decide to get rid of the Sheraton, you can just take out the aftermarket pups and keep them for something else.

Yeah the 57's would be ideal I think, but money's tight . . . and I don't think the Dimarzios would be much cheaper.

What's your budget look like? Dimazios are around 1/4 less than Gibson pickups. If you are looking to find a $20 pickup that sounds like $150 pickup, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Re: Gibson classic 57's

I was looking to spend around $120 to $140 for the set . . . I'd like to go the used route - but the guitar would look like a piece of junk with anything other than gold covered pups, and you don't see them too often.

What's the finish on your Sheraton? I take the hardware is gold and if so, I'd say double cream bobbins or zebra would look good. My LP Classic has an amber finish with gold hardware and I think the zebra bobbins go well with it.

Re: Gibson classic 57's

It's a really dark maroon coloured burst, with gold hardware . . . almost a purple.
