good neck pickup for a LP

I'm looking for a new neck pup for a les paul style ax. Mahogany body with maple cap, mahogany neck/rosewood board, fender style fixed bridge with brass plate around it.

I want something with some good to high output that isn't muddy. I've never been a fan of most of the stock neck pups i've tried besides the one in my artcore. I thought maybe a Duncan Distortion neck but haven't really heard one before.

For my bridge i'm going with either a Duncan JB (sh-4) or Duncan Custom (sh-5).
Going for something like the Billy Duffy from the Cult kinda sound.

If you are using a JB I'm pretty sure there is a law that says you should use either a Jazz or a 59 in the neck. I've used both in LPs and always have been happy.

+1

I used a JB SH-4 in the bridge and a JAZZ SH-2 in the neck on one off my LesPauls - it's a killer combination for that kind of guitar

Re: good neck pickup for a LP

yeah but i'm not sure the jazz has the output i'm looking for. I thought maybe pearly gates but it seems to have about the same output. I want something that can kick out some heavy rhythm but still be clear. I mainly use my neck pick ups for rhythm stuff but then don't have too much of a different sound come lead time.

'59, Jazz, Alnico II Pro. How about a Dimarzio Humbucker from Hell? or an Air Norton.

I spent some time on a Heritage 535 yesterday with a '59 in the neck, and it was awesome. Beautiful neck pickup right there. Awesome guitar as well, blew me completely away (but that's another story....)

Pearly Gates bridge model makes a great neck pickup, as well as a Screamin Demon for a higher output non-muddy neck pickup.

Duncan '59 is great, I like it a little more than the Jazz.

Re: good neck pickup for a LP

I have the JB/Jazz combination in two guitars and in both cases the Jazz is louder than the JB if both are cranked up to the same distance from the strings. It's the nature of the neck position. I don't own a '59 but I've heard quite a few and they're nice too.
