got new pickups today

I just got my new pups today (Fred, HS2, and Paf Pro) for my RG project. I still don't have it painted so I'm not quite ready for wiring yet. Would you guys recommend keeping the old switch/pots? the pots are 500K. If so, what's the best way to clean all the solder off them? heat them up and use a wire brush? Any tips would be appreciated.

thanks
Phil

You can get a little thing that sucks the solder up when it's heated. Make sure it's a good one. Mine is cheap and it sucks. I'd like to hear some other methods of removing solder myself. It has deinitely been a challenge over the years. I guess it wouldn't hurt to just replace them. I think it would be better, and faster to just change the pots.

For small amounts of solder like you have in guitar wiring, I really like braided copper tape. You press it against the solder with a soldering iron and when the solder melts, it gets sucked into the braid through capillary action. It's actually kind of fun to use.

They'll have it at the hardware store / electronics store where all the soldering supplies are.

Re: got new pickups today

I can think of two methods.

The right method, and the wrong method, which is plain quicker lol.

1) use a solder extractor tubial. it's a little hand held divice which sucks up the solider for you, bit if a pain to use though.

2) Is to merely heat up the solider area, then violently flick the soldier away with the iron, (being VERY careful in the process.)

bair in mind NOT to overheat the pots, or to use a gun, becasue if you overheat your pots, they'll stop working.
