Great Strat pickup combo using Ibanez parts
I dont normally get too excited about strats anymore or pickups for that matter, but I recently bought a $99 bullet strat and have been making some changes to it. I changed the tuners to grovers and the shaved the neck down ... not enough yet... but down to about 20-22mm. I came up with this really great sounding pickup combo that some of you guys around here who have some left over ibby parts might want to try. I used the stacked ~16k IBZ C2 pickups for the bass and treble, and an S1 8k in the middle position. I have this set up to 'split' the C2s in the 2 and 4 positions like a regular humbucker ibanez set up all of this on the 5 way switch with a 500k CTS pot with a 100pf treble bleed cap and no tone controls. So this all works out like this
1st treble position 16k pretty hot sounding strat sound
2nd postion top C2 coil and S1 in parallel one of the best 'in between' strat sounds i have heard
3rd decent sounding hot S1 sound
4th top bass C2 coil and S1 in parallel again great sounding 'in between" sound
5th position hot full bass sound from C2
If you back this all off on the pot to 7 with the treble bleed, this sounds like a pure strat sound... and with it full open its just one of the best sounding strats I have (out of like 15 japanese, mex and americans I own)
So try this out and let me know what you think...
I am going to round up another set of these and put them in one of my nicer strats...
