Hi all,
This is my first post here, so hopefully I didn't miss an obvious answer to my questions when I was searching the forums.
Basically, I'm planning on making a guitar, which I've never done before, although I've done a lot of maintenance on my RG570 and installed different pickups before. I think I have the basic idea of what I want to do with the overall build of the guitar, but I'm not sure what would be the best
pickup selection for what I want, so maybe you guys can help me out.
I've always liked Yngwie's neck pickup sound, so I was thinking of putting the YJM in the neck, but I'm not sure how to match a humbucker to it. I'm not even sure that the YJM would be my best bet for getting that sound, although it seems like a good start. I was thinking of putting a Gibson '57 Classic Plus in the bridge. I like the stock bridge pickup in my Les Paul Studio, so I figure the '57 is probably fairly close to it in terms of output and stuff, but might give a warmer sound?
When choosing pickups, what's the best way to determine how well pickups will match in terms of volume and the such? I read that bridge pickups need more output because the sound produced at that part of the string is not as loud as that at the neck position, which makes sense. But then I've also read that people say pickups with the same output will match better. Looking at Yngwie's pickup choices, for example, the YJM and HS-3 both have outputs of 93, although the DC Resistance is different. I don't really understand what effect the DC Resistance has on things though. Could someone explain that?
I also like the sound for the solo in the song "Twist" off Halford's Resurrection album. Does anyone have any idea which guitarist played that one and what their setup might have been? If I decide not to go for the YJM pickup, I'd like to know what he was using, because I'm sure he probably had a good match for it in the bridge.
Opinions and advice are welcome. I play a lot of different things, but I won't be happy if I can't get a decent clean sound out of the pickups *and* a good sound for metal as well. I'm currently playing through an Engl 530 preamp, so I think I should have enough gain there that I shouldn't need
high output pickups, but seriously, I'm sure you guys know a lot more about this stuff than I do, so any help is appreciated.
Thanks
