Help installing a new pickup

Hey guys

I have recently decided to embark on a jem building project!! I have got a jem body from a luthier here in england, it is an exact replica of the standard jem.

I recently bought the mo-joe pickup to fit into it but am a little puzzled as to exactly how i go about it!! The routing on the body for the humbuckers is the standard routing, rectangle with the added bits on the side for the mounting (i couldn't think of a better way of describing it!!). The problem i am having is that i have had the body painted in a chameleon paint that changes colour as it moves and so don't want to fit a pickguard over it, thus covering most of the paint!! Pickup rings don't work as the neck socket runs right up to the neck pickup and the jem clear pickguard doesn't have pickup mounting holes!!

Has anyone got any ideas how to mount the pickup??

Thanks in advance

Use a clear pickguard. If he's copied the jem routing, it will be routed for a pickguard. Although beware you will have your wiring on show for the world to see unless you cover that big hole where the electronics go with something.

Re: Help installing a new pickup

Hi there, thanks for the quick reply!!

I suspect i have more than likely mis-lead you! I think after perusing the jemsite page that my body is actually a copy of the Floral Pattern (i.e. the electronics are routed inn the back of the guitar), i have some photos of the body if this helps, but im not sure how to post them :-(

After looking at pics of the floral jem, am i right in thinking that the pickups are direct mounted as there are no pickup rings, and they are not mounted to the pickguard??

If this is is the case, has anyone got tips on how to do this effectively?

Many thanks

And sorry again for the mistake!!

If you go to one of the online auction sites and type in something like "Clear pickguard Ibanez" several examples will pop up, including ones for pickups that will be mounted to the pickguard.

If thats the case, then you can either mounth them to a clear pickguard, or directly to the body, it shouldn't make a difference. Some people will tell you direct mount gives better tone, those people are on crack, but I will say that direct mount is much more sturdy and looks much cooler, so it can feed back a bit less, whereas you'd have to put some faom in the cavity to control feedback with other types of mounting, whereas with direct mount pups the foam just goes underneath to keep the pickup at the correct height.
