How to remove rust from pole pieces and/or replace them?
Hey guys,
I just pulled out a plastic bag with a couple old pickups from my HM Strat and noticed that there is some rust on the pole pieces. Is there any good way to remove the rust or can you just replace them? If so, where do you get the replacements? My first thought was to lightly sand the rust off... but that seems somewhat silly since the rust would probably be attracted to the magnetism and stick to the pieces.
BTW, the pole pieces are black... so I'm sure sanding them will reveal the silver/grey surface beneath... not sure if that matters. My guess is that they were anodized black.
Thanks,
Jeff

I've used Noxon7 Metal polish/cleaner with great results on frets and pickup polepieces. A dab of that, let it sit, buff off with a cloth. However, if the rust has eaten through the black coating on the polepieces... get some black enamel paint maybe and one of those 001 craft paintbrushes?

Ben,
Can you snag that at any old store or did you get it from a specialty place?
Thanks for the info,
Jeff

Cool! Thanks, VOLTAGE. They are DiMarzio made OEM pickups made for Fender. Super3 actually and a matching neck model tweaked to go with the Super3, but it doesn't have a stock DiMarzio equivalent.
Thanks,
Jeff

VOLTAGE,
Sure, PM me with what you are asking for them. Not sure I need them, but if they are fairly inexpensive, it may be nice to have them around, just in case.
Would I be correct in assuming that they sell silver, gold and black pole pieces? Any other colors or finishes?
Thanks,
Jeff

Sorry it took so long to get back- my computer has been out of commission for a while!
Anyhow, if you choose to try that out before ordering replacement polepieces, you can pick up the Noxon7 at any Home Depot- that's where I got my bottle. It's great to have around for cleaning nasty frets, too, so it may be worth you while to pick some up, even if you do plan on replacing the polepieces.

No prob, Ben. I've been out of touch as well taking care of my one year old daughter with a nasty stomach virus... just getting back into the swing of things today.
Thanks,
Jeff
