Humbucker from Hell mini-review

I just got a Humbucker from Hell and Tone zone installed in my PGM301. A lot of people have posted their reviews on the Tone Zone so I won't bother posting mine. However, the Humbucker from Hell is not a pickup a lot of people use so I will discuss that.

For those not familiar with the guitar I mounted the HFH in, it's got a basswood body, hard tail (strings through body) bridge, maple fingerboard and a Jem SC in the middle. I'm running the guitar through a Boss GT8, RadTone Harmonic Converger and M-Audio Studio Pro 3 monitors.

CLEAN TONES
===========
On clean sounds, this pickup sounds like a really bright humbucker. It sounds somewhere between a Gibson P90 and a traditional Strat single coil. If you've researched this pickup at all, that shouldn't surprise you. It's a cool funky sound. It's not as bright in the neck position as some folks might think.

When split with the Jem SC, it gives a great, shimmery sound.

DISTORTED TONES
==============
With distortion, this pickups is pretty wild. It allows decent pinched harmonics on the lower strings and, as expected, is incredibly clear sounding. The single coil attributes of this pickup are definitely more evident when using this pickup with distortion. I think it's a good neck pickup for overdriven SRV-like tones or shredder tones. It be a nice choice if you're looking for something a little different than the standard issue Air Norton (I've got one of those in my RG2720).

THE BOTTOM LINE
==============
I'm glad I bought it. It's a cool and somewhat unique pickup. I'd buy it again, that's for sure.

Cool, thanks for posting. I have been wondering about the HFH for a while. I think it's a good choice for those of us who are looking for a kind of souped up Strat tone without the hum. Paul Gilbert has sounded great with this pickup -- very clean. Maybe it would show up a bad player, though. That's a good thing to make you work on precision!

I don't have a video cam but then again, you don't need to see the pickup you want to hear it. I'll see if I can record some audio clips featuring it this weekend.

Re: Humbucker from Hell mini-review

I've had the HFH in my RG1570 for a couple of years now and I love it. Like ToneBoy, I also have a TZ in the bridge.

I agree 100% with ToneBoy's review... it's a very clear, tight and sweet sounding pickup. With distortion it really sings, and has a lot of balls. Harmonically, it's very rich and it does have the single coil snap, especially when playing single string runs on the unwounds. The output is really hot, and matches well with the TZ.

I love having it in my RG since it offers a different tonal palette to play with versus my other guitars.
