Joe Why Joe Why. From Dimarzio to duncan

Anyone know why satriani would have his other main chrome boy equipped with pearly gates as opposed to the much better sounding fred and paf pro. Thanks. i just want to make sure satriani isn't haveing a major brainfart or something.

That particular guitar sounded better with the Pearly's in it. Didn't Pearly get stolen?

if you don't already know: Fred & Pearly Gates sound somewhat similar. noisy Duncans? can't relate to this... all my Dimarzios & Duncans are, well, quiet...

I own pickups from both companys, they are quite comparable.

I can't speak as much about the tone of Pearly, since unless you're REALLY close to the stage it was tough to tell which was which, but i actually slightly preferred the tone of the white JS-1000 he replaced pearly with after she was stolen- a little darker and warmer than "chrome boy," and a touch bluesier. Cool stuff. A brain fart? not in my book...

The tone on "Until We Say Goodbye" from the CD/DVD "Live In San Francisco" is awesome. I can tell the difference clearly on that song and I believe that's when he used Pearly. In fact, I went out and got Pearly Gates for a guitar because of that tone ;-)

why i like both:

Dimarzio: smooth, warm tones for overdrive

Duncan: clarity

I somehow doubt that a world-class musician would bring out new pickups untested on a stage, or "brainfart" as you say. I think it more likely that Satch actually liked the pickups, and used them to please himself and offer himself another set of tones. Most of us here probably have a multitude of pickups in our guitars...and with the number of models each manufacturer makes, alot of them are similar to each other.

jslegacy: Are you out fo your mind? SD Pearly Gates are one of the most beautifull sounding pickups ever made. Where do you get that idea that fred and pafpro are much better sounding? PG are as good as fred and pafpro if not better (and I'm a Dimarzio junkie BTW)

I personally like both duncan and dimarzio,as far as satch he did not like the way the fred and pro's sounded in that ONE axe
The PG is a great pu as is those two dimarzio's.

I have Duncan Quarter Pounder single coils in my tele and they're very high output yet they're extremely quiet. They're so beefy and quiet that I use them for my extreme metal stuff, a-la Strapping Young Lad.
