Question

killswitch and added noise/hum

Hey there
So I got a bunch of momentary switches, and decided to test one of them.
connected 2 wires to the switch (wrapped the copper around its legs through the holes and duct taped it tight) and connected them to the input jack from behind the guitar (no soldering or duct tape here, just inserted them till they held on)
now the killswitch did its job well, it killed the sound when pressed, but what i noticed is that there was a lot of extra hum when the guitar is idle, almost like the hum you get if you leave your wah pedal on. anyone knows what could cause this?

this is how i connected it:

update: the hum appears as soon as one of the wires touches the shorter leg of the input jack.

Installing the switch like that makes it work as if you unplugged your guitar, so nasty buzzing will be the result.

You've wired it up right. Are you getting the extra hum when the killswitch is engaged, or disengaged?

nice word play there

doesnt even matter, as soon as 1 wire touches the input jack non-ground leg, there's hum.

Glad you liked it

How many lugs does that switch have? I'm thinking of a way of wiring it up differently.

Re: killswitch and added noise/hum

it makes the same sound as it would make if i took the guitar cable out and touched its tip.

when i short both legs of the input jack there is silence, but if only the hot is touched (the tip of the jack inside the guitar) i get the hum

the switch has 2 legs

I've had the very same problem. Not just with the killswitch. if when you touch something metal that isn't the strings then its the earths. In my case it was dry joints because the tip on my soldering iron was knackered. As its a heat controllable one I got it to work by turning up the heat and all my solder joints were dull not shiney!
