Mahogany and Breed
Hi all,
I just bought an RG321MH and I was looking to change pickups. Everyone recommends
Super Distortion
or Tone Zone for
bridge pickup
for Mahogany guitar (some liking TZ, some hating them). How about Breed? How does it sound in Mahogany? Or maybe even Evo?
Neck will be a Paf Pro.
Thanks

Re: Mahogany and Breed
I have two breed neck pups in a mahogany/maple set neck guitar, and they rock... really vintagey tone that can bite as much as i want it to, wil lots of natural and artificial harmonics, to boot...

Re: Mahogany and Breed
+1
I've got Breeds in my RGA121 and love the tone. I think in our case^ the maple top may make a difference though. They may be be too dark in mahogany alone. I'm not sure.

Breed or Norton, both sound good in Mahogany.

Re: Mahogany and Breed
i ran a breed in my mohogany RG for awhile, it sounded good but seemed too warm for the thing no matter what i played it through. i got tired of the sound pretty quick. it also sounded too similar to the
paf pro
i had in the neck slot.
it's my experience that there wasn't a lot of variation in sounds with that setup.

Thanks for the replies!
In a band, yes. Playing original stuff, but some covers (crappy stuff, not what I love to play). 2 guitar players, but I do most of the playing, rhythm and soloing (other one is more like Brian Adams, one strum and then singing). I am a huge Zappa fan and love his tone from Hot Rats to early 80s stuff (up to Them Or Us approximately). I already have a Jem 7VWH, and an American Texas Special Strat (my first guitar) that I modified with a Paf Pro on bridge (cutting out the pickguard!) and a Pro Track on neck.
Thanks again.

andy, in my rg321(great workhorse) i use an
air norton
and
tone zone
. that rig covers every style that i do. i play from pop, funk, rock, metal, a little bit of country and jazz as well. now you saying that you like zappa, makes me think that you would do well with the super distortion. since your going with the paf pro in the neck, you may notice an ouput difference between neck and bridge(doubtful, but you never know). then i would look into the breed like you were originally doing. i only say this because your in a group with another guitar player. the tone zone is my favorite pickup in mahogany, but does not like other guitar players as much. the tone is so big that it fills up a track and doesn't cut as well as something like an evo or x2n does, but i also think that neither of those 2 pickups is what you're looking for. so the best compromise is either the super disrtion or the breed.

Re: Mahogany and Breed
Thank you very much Rich!
I am debating between the two (SD or Breed). It'll be a last minute decision I assume.
And yeah, the RG321 is great. I love it. I'm going to change the p-ups and the volume pot (a slight turn, and your full distortion on that thing!), and then it will be even better.
Thanks again!
