Middle single coil

Hi!
I recently got paf pro (neck) and tonezone (bridge) for my rg 1570.
Humbuckers are my speciality, but I am not too familiar with single coils...
so my question is:

what singlecoil would act nice in middle spot between my paf pro and TZ humbuckers?

I am looking for hotter, twangy kind of sound,I bought this combo to make it my Paul gilbert- like axe?
just don't reccomend me evo(jem) single because of that, because it's unavailable for me and my distributors.

thanks for suggestions...

Re: Middle single coil

Go FS-1, all the way. My favorite Dimarzio single coil by far.

I have two other guitars equipped with a HS-2 and an HS-3 with TZ/AN combo, and I don't really like them at all.

Re: Middle single coil

i put a red velvet between two breeds (in a 550)...the whole set seemed to lack punch. I was unimpresed by the RV.

Re: Middle single coil

Seymour Duncan Vintage rails (SVR-1N)

very good clean sound, with the gain up a little, it sounds like a
blues guitar.

that's what I have in the middle for my guitar.

Very interesting, because I think RV packs more of a punch than BV.

Re: Middle single coil

I have been using the Carvin AP11 for a while in several guitars. Higher output and nice and chimey. Balances well with the DiMarzios I have tried (PAF Pro, Fred, Air Norton, Tone Zone).

It is available in regular or reverse wound. And at $33, it is a steal!

Re: Middle single coil

i have the dp402 virtual vintage blues. totally quiet and it's a good balance with my tone zone and norton. be careful with HS single coils. i bought a HS3 and a dp217 yjm(same thing basically)and they have VERY low output. switching from a a medium or high output humbucker to one of those is very very unbalaced. the humbucker is twice as loud.

I think the whole idea about using single coils like the HS-2 is to give you the 2-4 notch positions--not using the single by itself...

Re: Middle single coil

yeah tony,that's true.
My primarily goal is to have solid 2 & 4 positions on my 5-way register.

I don't really like ceramic pickups,so I'll avoid fast track and similar stuff.
I also do not like humming,so it must be hum-cancelling pickup.

hmmm...seems like I narrowed my choices to Hs-2,virtual vintage blues and virtual vintage '54 pickups.

However,I am bit concerned for HS-2 because of it's too low output.
As I said,I am aiming for more treblier and twangier sound that responds nicely to picking dynamics...

looks like we have trillema here

Re: Middle single coil

i dont know how it works in europe, but in the us, dimarzio gives you 30 days to send it back to dimarzio if you aren't happy and exchange it for another. of course dimarzio is located in the usa so that might not be available in europe.
the HS series is basically what yngwie uses, and they seem to work great for him, but they are not combined with humbuckers. IMHO, they do not work with humbuckers. even in the 2 & 4 positions. i never returned a pickup in my life until the HS. do a search on them and i think you'll find a lot of people agree. there are much better choices than the HS...

Re: Middle single coil

I have a Virtual 2 from DiMarzio, and it balances superbly in hum-canceling mode while it still retains a lot of chimey character. Great for what I wanted
