middle single not working

Wiring help please, wired up my jem build following dimarzio instructions, its all the same but my 5 way switch is a 8 in line one, not the 4 per side like their pic. Single coil doesnt work on its own, but does in positions 2 & 4 giving straty sound.
thanks

Re: middle single not working

andy, on an 8 inline switch the mid pup should be the soldered to the second lug from the end. connections are as follows
depending on which side you view, one will be - left to right:

1. not used
2. bridge coil split
3. neck coil split
4. ground
5. output
6. bridge hot
7. mid hot
8. neck hot

Wow I'm completly wrong, I've been using this

& have added in the text to relate to the dimarzio diagram
which translates to this?
1 bridge hot
2 middle hot
3 neck hot
4 output - the one connected to the volume pot?
5 not used
6 bridge split
7 ground
8 neck split

Re: middle single not working

have you done all the usual tapping the pole piece testing ?
I cant think why it would work in those 2 positions and not alone !

could it be the switch not connecting in position 3?

Re: middle single not working

yes, those import type switches sometimes the lugs are crap, if you move them around you can get a connection.

Re: middle single not working

It's worth doing the tap test as you may be hearing coil tapped humbuckers on their own in position 2 and 4 which will sound "stratty" check that the single coil is active in pos 2 and 4, if not then the pickup might be dead. If it's definitely working in pos 2 and 4 then the switch may be duff. Don't forget the only connections to the single coil are to the switch - lug 3 on your diagram and to the earth - volume pot casing.
