My dream came true: Active Dimarzio pickups!

Saw it on sevenstring.org

On the Dimarzio site, They are called D Activator and they are available in 7 string too! No need to route the body for EMGs.

I'm def. getting one as soon as I can

They're not actually active.(no battery)
Their Dimarzios passive take on an EMG type sound(!?).

They supposedly give you that EMG type power and headroom but without the slight sterility that some people find with EMG's.

I personally love EMG's but i also love the sound of good passives, although the two are very different i find.
That's why i have guitars fitted with both.

I'm very interested in these new Dimarzios though!

I feel that Passives have more personality and character than Actives. I love the EMG 81, but I feel that the guitar I have it installed in is capable of more.

Hopefully DiMarzio pulls it off. I'd love to get the punch I get with the 81, with a little more soul.

Well, according to the DiMarzio site, they have a high output with a fairly low dc resistance. That is basically the EMG formula. EMG's are wound to about a 10k dc resis. bu the preamp boosts the output. The DiMarzios are wound to 11.4 k, so they shouldn't have that much compression. Definately not like an X2N or EVO. Ultimately, nothing replaces first hand experience.

They also are releasing the Air Norton S!! Pretty cool!!

I have a quick noob-type question: what is 'headroom'?

Thanks

Thanks
"headroom" is when you turn something up in volume (an amplifier, a surround sound system, a guitar, a car stereo, a speaker etc.) and it doesn't distort.

example:

say you turn your surround sound system up at home really loud and it's not distorting the speakers. That's considered good or high headroom.

or say you turn your car stereo system up really loud but you can hear the speakers distorting at a very low volume. That's considered bad or no headroom.

Another way of putting it is how clean a signal is in relation to how loud you can turn it up in volume.

Loud + Clean = Headroom
Loud + Distortion = Clipping or Overdrive

Re: My dream came true: Active Dimarzio pickups!

Yeah, it means it has "space" to turn it up without it distorting, hence "headroom".

A Fender Twin has a lot of headroom. A JCM800 usually does not. That's why clean guys go for the Fender Twins alot of time. Rock players gravitate towards amps with low headrooms, so they can get them to distort naturally better. (not preamp, but power amp).
