My Seymour Duncan Custom Shop pickup - The Magnetar

A magnetar is a type of neutron star with an extremely powerful magnetic field. But it's also my new Seymour Duncan Custom Shop pickup! I gave MJ a description of what I wanted which read like this:

"A 7-string bridge pickup for a basswood Ibanez RG (maple neck, rosewood fretboard): tight bass and slightly scooped mids but a bit of a kick in the upper mids and treble a sort of dry sound that gets percussive when palm-muting. I tend to favor bridge humbuckers between 11k and 14k. To put it another more abstract way: a pickup whose tone feels like sanded maple, tastes like creme brle and looks like sunlight through a glass of beer."

And here it is: The Magnetar! It has an Alnico 8 magnet and a DC resistance of 13.90k. I installed it in my UV777BK. You can hear some rough recordage here: https://soundcloud.com/peterhodgsonguitar/magnetar-test

If I had to describe it in comparitive terms I'd say it's somewhere between a JB and an Evolution. It's thicker and hairier than an Evo and not as harsh, and it has a bit of that same woody JB vibe that you hear really clearly on Megadeth's 'Countdown To Extinction' and 'Youthanasia' albums. And it djents too. \m/

I've already told you elsewhere, but I'll say it again. That sounds awesome, and I'd love a six string version of it!

Sounds great.

But what amp are you playing through?

the pickup sounds like it should be epic. I like the JB but felt it could use a little more kick and i liked the natural sort of compression of the evo i just wish it had more bass and less high end.

So it sounds like you found a winning balance between the two. Congrats

I think from memory Petie used Amplitube or similar.

Glad you folks are digging it! I'll be doing a lot of recording with it in the next few weeks - I kinda wanna redo a bunch of already-recorded stuff since it sounds so cool!!! But I'll probably do some new things first.

Mark Knopfler? Yeah.

Hehe.

Starts at $160 for a typical humbucker, with additional charges for certain options.
