Neck Breed sounding kinda muddy - JEM77VBK

I can't seem to get the adjustment on this right...new strings (9 thru 42) and I can't seem to get a pickup height that doesn't sound overly muddy with distortion...even with tone on 10.

Help?

I have mine set about 2mm from the strings(with the 24th fretted). I also have the poles brought out just a hair over the face of the pickup. This seemed to sound the best to me, but I have a pretty bright rig.

Breeds usually sound muddy IMO.

I'm getting a set of Breeds later on in the week. I sure hope they don't sound muddy. I'm experimenting with lower output pickups and so far I seem to like them.

Once I get my Breed sets in, I'll post a review. This will be in an RG 1570.

disconnect the tone pot IF you have it hooked up
both breeds are pretty warm and do not need extra treble rolled off

Re: Neck Breed sounding kinda muddy - JEM77VBK

My review of the Breeds. The neck position sounded awesome. Basically has the tonality of a PAF PRO, but much fatter and thicker sounding. I did a bunch of fast runs on it and it WAS NOT muddy at all. This is the only pickup that gives it that fat warm sound without muddying up. I dunno about you guys, but since we all have different guitar and gear set ups the pickup will most likely sound different in each one. From my experience..there was no mud in this pickup.

The bridge position is amazing. Nice, punchy..this has a similiar EQ as the Tone Zone, except not as prevalent. More clear and defined than the Tone Zone. I'm surprised this pickup doesn't get used often and gets over looked. Tone is better than a Tone Zone, in a way that the leads ring out a bit more and the rhythm has a bit more bite and crunch. Versatile like all the users described here in the forum. Can play from jazz/blues to metal. More versatile than the Evo and not much of a treble spike like the Evo. I recommend a full set of these if you want a pickup that can cover a lot of ground, while retaining excellent tone.

I never had "mud" problems with the Breed be it in the neck or the bridge, and I also prefer them vastly over Evos

+1. Breeds have more flavor in the rhythm section than the Evo's.
