The "optimal" spot for a neck pickup is right around the 23rd fret. Because these necks are 24 frets, the pickup is displaced a few inches. He flips it around so that when splitting the coil, the single that's on is closer to that 23rd fret, rather than closer to the middle pickup.
Does that make sense?
