Neck Pickup Question ????

Do any of you know for sure why Steve Vai flips his neck pickup around so that it is reversed. I noticed that the Dimarzio logo is on the top and is upside down. Does having it reversed like this make a difference in sound? Have any of you tried this on your Jem's ??????
Any info would be great

You'll find most HSH Ibanez are like this, it just makes the bridge side coil of the neck pickup the active coil.

The "optimal" spot for a neck pickup is right around the 23rd fret. Because these necks are 24 frets, the pickup is displaced a few inches. He flips it around so that when splitting the coil, the single that's on is closer to that 23rd fret, rather than closer to the middle pickup.

Does that make sense?
