need some p-up advise

i'm having some problems choosing wich p-ups to put in my alderbody/mapleneck/ebonyboard guitar

thinking of something like this:

neck: breed, evo or paf pro
middle: hs-2
bridge: evo/evo2 or tonezone

im looking for a not to harsh sound with good dynamics that's suitable for metal, fusion and instrumental stuff ala vai but still great for heavy rythm playing

any suggestions? ;D

No, i wouldn't suggest Evo's if you still want heavy rhythm sounds...

I would go with a tonzone or breed or something similiar in the bridge and maybe a breed in the neck, but that depends on your choice of bridge pickup

Or maybe evo2/breed? I'm not really sure...i've read some threads about the tone zone and some people says it tends to get muddy and that's not at all what i want...so i'm a little confused:\:P

I changed around my pick-ups last month, and initially had a bit of confusion too. My guitar is basswood, with a maple top (RG320FM), put I will put in my $.02 anyways.

At first, I was thinking about a Tonezone for the bridge, but since alot of people mentioned the muddiness of it, plus the fact that I didn't want to go chugga-chugga all of the time, I settled for a Super Distortion for the bridge and a PAF-Pro for the neck. The Super Distortion has the same output level as the Tonezone (output = 425Mv), but it is eq'ed very different. The SD covers British metal very well, and the PAF obviously covers Vai/Satch. They are a perfect match, and both produce great clean tones too. I only have one RG at this point, and I needed versatility, not one-trick ponies. If you only have the one guitar, then I would not look at one-dimentional pick-ups.

I hope this helps.

I'd go with TZ/PAF Pro combo.

Re: need some p-up advise

Just to give you an idea:

I have Tone Zone/Air Norton in one of my guitars, and it absolutely screams. It sounds killer, and does it all.

I am also getting ready to put an Evo2/Evo Neck in a very similar guitar, so I can't quite tell you about that one, but I'm sure it will sound good.

But the Tone Zone/Air Norton combo sound super killer.

If you don't want to go the Dimarzio route, get a Seymour Duncan hybrid.

I have a JB/Custom Custom Hybrid, and that sucker sounds absolutely un-freaking beleivable. It is right below the output of an EMG 81, but does it all.

PAF Pros sound really great, too, but they are not going to be as high output as the rest.

You might even want to look at a Mo' Joe, PAF Joe Combo.

You can't go wrong with a PAF Pro in the neck. You can get Satriani and Vai type tones, but also some great glassy clean sounds with it in parallel mode.

For the bridge, if you want more dynamics you might want something with less output than the Tone Zone or Evo2. Have you looked at the Norton (regular, not Air Norton)? Its output is around 350mV if I remember correctly, so it will give you some dynamics but still be good for heavy rhythm. Plus it also has some really wicked harmonics.

I've got the Norton/PAF Pro combo in my 6-string and I love it.

Re: need some p-up advise

dimarzio told me that (but it was basswood body, not alder) evo and evo 2 will deliver a good metal/fusion sound.

and what about rythm? i don't have my evo 2 yet, but i think my boss ds-1 will go for some good distorion rythm sound through this pickup
