Neodymium Pickups!?

http://www.q-tuner.com/gl-6.shtml

Well these certainly aren't commonplace. (At least in my neck of the woods)

Whats your take and thoughts. I'm considering ordering 4 or 5 to experiment come next pay check, and they are partially handmade (or so they claim).

And at least they look pretty

Re: Neodymium Pickups!?

!!! about time... these magnets have done wonders to enhance bass responsiveness and refined high frequencies for ear/headphones; can't say I've heard a Neodynmium Celestion though but i'm sure its properties are the same...
lemme know how these sound... i'm interested how they respond compared to regular pickups.

Re: Neodymium Pickups!?

Tom Anderson has been making neodymium magnet pickups for years. It's not a new concept. The N/Dym magnet isn't the key element to the Q-tuner pickups. It's the sideways coils (done by Bill Lawrence many years ago) and the three rows of poles (to "fine tune" your sound) that make these unique. In other words, if you used N/Dym in a PAF wind it doesn't make it "better". And using Ceramic in a Q-Tuner styled pickup wouldn't necessarily make it "worse" either, just different. I would mostly like to experiment with them just for the pole piece location.

Re: Neodymium Pickups!?

I could imagine a Neodymium pickup having way more magnet pull then a X2N.

Can someone comment on this? You'd think they'd take this into account when designing these pickups since this would kill sustain. Anyone?

Re: Neodymium Pickups!?

It depends on the amount of magent present, obviously. If one is twice the strength of the other, they may use half as much?

The Q Tuners sound very piezo/acoustic like. A cheap(er) alternative if you don't want to get a piezo bridge.

I'm curious as to how their "Metal" oriented pickups sound and what wood would be optimal for them.

From what you say, that kind of pickup might be nice in the neck position.

Search the forums for info about Q-Tuners, we have talked about them quite a few times before. There are also some demo's floating around that were done by a member here.

Re: Neodymium Pickups!?

am very interested in combining one of these fellas with my sustainiac...

the big high end frequency response should allow for some fun!

just dont want to spend $150 on one pickup... need to think of a way of getting one for cheap.... hmmmmm

Re: Neodymium Pickups!?

these are awesome pickups - great for metal, plenty of sustain, and the clearest sounding things I've ever tried. I did the overdriven demos for the site and have had plenty of time to play with them. I'm not sure really whether the sound is at all comparable to a piezo, having had one of those in a Parker years ago, but then again it was ages ago so I can't remember The clean sound is very, very clear though, and the harmonics just ping off - check out Erno's bass demo on the site.

Erno knows a lot about music - and the pickups are definitely metal
