Opinions on DiMarzios...
I just ordered a used RG1550. And the seller will install new DiMarzios in it instead of the stock ones...
My preferred tone would be this:
Bridge HB: Tight bass, fairly high output. Distinct with nice string separation. Mainly for
palm muting
metal rhytm. Absolutely not muddy. Clarity with power...
Neck HB: Nice warm jazzy cleans when using clean channel on amp. Should also be able to shred on distorted channel(think
John Petrucci
). Clear and dynamic.. Not muddy here either.
I decided to try DiMarzios this time, as I've never had one in a guitar before...
Now I was adviced to put a D-Sonic in the bridge and a Paf Pro in the neck, and did so...
Even though it's decided I'd like to hear more opinions. Can I expect to be satisfied or are there things in my tone description that doesn't quite match these pickups?

Re: Opinions on DiMarzios...
You should have gone with the
Air Norton
in the neck given your requirments and im very suprised someone told you to put the PAF in instead if you told them you wanted that sound... very suprised..

Oh.. Could you give me a reason? Bad cleans in
Paf Pro
?
I was myself thinking of Air Norton at first...

Re: Opinions on DiMarzios...
What you described is the Air Norton in a nutshell, down to john petrucci using it himself, I would call the PAF the opposite of that, other than it not being muddy.

Re: Opinions on DiMarzios...
Ok.. Well, I'll give the Paf a try. If it don't work out I'll change it...
No opinion about the D -sonic?

Re: Opinions on DiMarzios...
I have a D-Sonic in my basswood/Floyd RG470.
I think it will do exactly what you describe. I gave a mini review somewhere around here. It is a surprisingly good pickup.
I think with a good
tube amp
it would be positively badass.
I am still searching for my tone, so I just ordered a Lawrence L500XL.

@ztevie,
Sounds like you want the Petrucci set-up, Steve's Special (bridge), and Air Norton (neck).

Yeah, your descriptions sound exactly like you want a Steve's Special in the bridge and an Air Norton in the neck.

Re: Opinions on DiMarzios...
Just an FYI, I believe that Petrucci uses a D-Sonic, or a modified variant.

Re: Opinions on DiMarzios...
Thanks guys, always nice to hear different views.
Well, let's see what the Sonic and Paf can do for me... If they're not too terrible I'll give 'em a few months.. Worst scenario is to put in something else.
I will also throw in a Bareknuckles Trilogy I've got laying around here somewhere in the middle position....
Isn't Petrucci using D-Sonic? Of course it's probably not the same version us normal people can buy, haha....
And I could probably not nail his tone even if he gave me his own guitar. But I'd be close...?

Re: Opinions on DiMarzios...
IIRC, Petrucci first used a Steve's Special back in the Images and Words/Awake days. Then he switched to a
Tone Zone
. Then, recently, he's been using a D-Sonic.
