Question

paf pro or paf joe?

which of these two would be more almost HS-3 single coil sounding?
what i need is that glassy yngwie type tone but in a full humbucker size and the HFH is not hot enough for me? and not quite fat enough for the more bluesy stuff.
from the dimarzio tone chart the paf joe looks real promising with its lower bass and increased treble

You must have already made up your mind, lol. I had the same dilemna in my thread and you recommended me the paf pro.

Personally I like that vintage Satriani sound so I will probably favor the paf pro. Just lost an auction for a fred though.... so we'll see.

haha, never thought to see "vintage" and "satriani" in a same team!:-)
anyways, paf pro is always a great option in neck position, and sounds really nice when splitted.

the paf pro has a bit more power, too. although the joe is fatter. me personally, i use the air norton and then split it for the fat single coil tone.

i have a air norton on the way that i got real cheap and will try this single coil ideal for the yngwie lead tones

For that kind of sound, I'd say wire up a PAF Pro in parallel rather than series. That will give you a hum-cancelling single-coil like sound with decent output.

You could also use a parallel/series switch to provide the parallel sound plus regular PAF Pro sound with more power. You can also do a coil-split but that would not be hum cancelling.

Re: paf pro of joe?

the paf joe is supposed to sound more single coilish than the paf pro, which has more output. it has more high end and lower bass, so there is a little more 'shimmer' than the paf pro.

yeah and it still could be split whereas IF i go with parallel or coil split on the air norton or whatever that is it!
i think i will buy a paf joe and give it a test run,i think IF i dont like it i can sell it pretty fast around here

The PAF Joe is a sweet pickup. I have one in my Swamp Ash Warmoth along with a D-Sonic. A great combo!

the AN is freaking insane as a coil tapped single. really fat. i have a virtual vintage blues in the neck of a 21 fret strat(alder) of mine and the air norton in all of my mahogany RGs and sa120. the air norton is even fatter than the vv blues in those 24 fret rgs. and super fat in the 22 fret sa120. all that and still retaining the strat quack. it is incredible how good it sounds.
