PAF7 + Basswood for metal?

I personally wouldn't.

I love Basswood but PAF7's just aren't good for metal. In terms of output, I'd say you need a Tone Zone 7 or more.

And I don't care what anyone says, raising the gain on a low output pickup does not make is sound like a high output. It still lacks the crunch. Perfect metal pickups have outputs in the 350HZ to 450HZ range. With those, you can get a great crunch while still getting great clarity and articulation.

As a reference, I'm a Technical Death Metal guitarist. Just figured I'd throw that in there to reassure that I'm not some 80's glam rocker who thinks that Megadeth is the heaviest band on Earth

No. And I don't like the TZ 7. Super flabby low end. TZ is my fav 6 string pickup though I really really liked the CL 7.

Try the blaze. It sounds similar but more is hotter and more scooped; better for basswood I've found.

A paf7 is fine if you want to sound korny (ha, ha, ha...). But with basswood... try it; it'll depend on what bridge you have.

The lundgren M7 is also worth checking out if you're looking for a low output 7 string pickup.

You misunderstand me. I'm not saying that the Tone Zone is a good metal pickup. I'm saying that it has the OUTPUT of a good metal pickups.

I agree that it is kind of flubby. But it's a great pickup if you have an overly tight ENGL or something.

Not misunderstood. Just my opinion. I do not like the TZ 7. I've played on it through engls and lots of amps in the studio and through a Axe Fx standard( this was a few years ago). Just did not like how the low end was not as focused as I thought it would be.

6 string is a whole new world though. Super awesome there. TZ is in all my 6 string guitars it is good for metal and anything else.

I HATE the CL 6 string but I LOVE the 7 string version. weird. lol oh well.

I love the tone zone 6, so i approached the TZ7 with high expectations. I was disappointed in terms of tonal resemblance, but i still like the warmth on the high strings. the low b string kind of sucks; i wouldn't even think about using it for metal.

I wouldn't use a Tone Zone for any metal on any guitar. Probably since I can't keep a guitar tuned higher than C# for more than a week.

Just look into the standard pickups that metalheads use. D-Activator, Crunch Lab, D-Sonic, Blaze Custom, EVO, etc.
