Pickup and wiring help needed
I recently swapped out my IBZ humbuckers for an Evo2 bridge and Evo neck, and this is my current wiring setup:
Position 1:
Bridge pickup
Position 2: Bridge coil tapped + Mid single coil
Position 3: Mid single coil
Position 4: Mid single coil + Neck coil tapped
Position 5: Neck pickup
1. Planning to remove the mid single coil but I wanted to know whether the stock RG2550 switch can handle this setup:
Position 1: Bridge pickup
Position 2: Inner coils, parallel
Position 3: Outer coils, series
Position 4: Outer coils, parallel
Position 5: Neck pickup
2. Anyone know where I can get this
wiring diagram
?
3. If I want to remove the tone control, is it as simple as disregarding the wire connects from the volume pot to the tone pot? And will removing the tone pot alter my tone?
Thanks in advance

Re: Pickup and wiring help needed
You can't do that wiring with the stock switch. You would need the big superswitch that Ibanez uses in the prestige 3120 guitar.(too bad as I just sold one on *bay). Check stewmac.com as I think they have a switch that can do this.

Re: Pickup and wiring help needed
Thanks for clarifying that, I think I'll stick with the stock switch for now.
Can anyone help me with a wiring diagram for:
Position 1: Bridge pickup
Position 2: Bridge coil tapped + Mid single coil
Position 3: Bridge + Neck
inner coils
Position 4: Mid single coil + Neck coil tapped
Position 5: Neck pickup
TIA!

Re: Pickup and wiring help needed
In order to do any of the non standard options you'll need a *superswitch* style switch. The Ibanez version is the VLX91, the use it in some RGs and some Jems, check to see if you have one it looks like this:
If you don't have this and still want the options you mention then you'll need to get one, Max at
Cottam Guitars
has them for £23
As for part 2, yes just disconnect and remove the tone pot. The guitar should sound slightly brighter/punchier...

Re: Pickup and wiring help needed
Wonderful, thanks a lot Jim!
The stock switch looks nothing like that but will I need a superswitch if I simply want to change only the mid position to tap the inner coils of the humbuckers?

Re: Pickup and wiring help needed
Yup, the standard switch in position 2 and 4 just shorts out a pair of the switch contacts so you can't have the single coil in pos 2 and 4 and change it for pos 3 as it uses the same contact.
The super switch has a different contact for each position. if you want any contacts shorted out you do it yourself with the wiring, but it does mean position 2 and 4 don't use the same contacts as pos 3
You could use your switch to give:
1 Bridge HB
2 Bridge HB tapped
3 Bridge HB tapped + Neck HB tapped
4 Neck HB tapped
5 Neck HB
And then add the single coil with a push pull switch on the volume knob, but you'll sill have to buy a new push pull switch!

Re: Pickup and wiring help needed
Get the Ibanez VLX91, you will then avoid that the screws and the cap don't fit.
And the vlx91 is smaller and very easy to work on.

That's what he meant mate.
I should have done the same. I got the 4-pole superswitch that was a bitch to install and solder.

Re: Pickup and wiring help needed
After a day of searching, I finally found what I was looking for on Ibanez.com, except I'll need to figure out how to run the outer coils in parallel.
Hope this diagram helps others too:

Re: Pickup and wiring help needed
I've got my Evolutions wired up the way it shows in the Evolution single coil diagram; does that mean I should have a VLX91 too? I'm using the standard Ibanez 5 way switch (from an RG170 no less
)? Sorry for the thread hijack, I'm still learning when it comes to electronics.

Re: Pickup and wiring help needed
You'll need a super-switch like the VLX91 if you require anything the stock switch can't do for you.
The standard 5-way switch can do this:
http://www.ibanez.com/support/wiring/2007/RG1570.gif
- but if you require anything like coil-tapping the humbuckers to work together, then you should consider the VLX91.

Cheers for the reply, I may have to pick one of those up after all.
