pickup decision time

Ok so its been 9 months with my RG1570 with its v7/s1/v8's... so you know what this is about already. Now some people say the stock pickups aren't that bad. Honestly, I've played with better sounding $300 Jacksons, etc. at the store (IMO). I find the v8 to sound like i'm using old strings even when there new; very muddy. Anyone else think this? Now what I'm wondering is, some said its like a lower-output Tonezone. I'm thinking I should upgrade, no? BTW, do the medium output humbuckers sound as muffled as the v8, just out of curiosity, not that i'm getting a medium, just wondering if theres a difference for the price. Thnx, Jon

You know something, I still have my RG320 with powersounds and I think it sounds a lot better; I thought it was just me. Theyre more powerful it seems.

Re: pickup decision time

the output of a pickup and it's voice or tone are two different things, they are almost not related.

I actually like the bridge powersounds pickup on my 2001 GRX70 too. The others sound crap though.

I have a RG1570 too. I find that the V7 and V8 pickups are quite decent in their own sense. But I wanted something with more clarity and definition, so out they went, replaced by a D Sonic and Air Norton.

With single coils the higher the output the warmer the pickup is. The less output the more bright sounding. I'll bet it applies to HB's as well.

Re: pickup decision time

There are few things that make pu sound muddy or ditry. Pu design, quality of construction, eq of a pu, and pu output. As far as output, more output -> more dirty. It may not always be like that cause other factors may intervene..but if you have 2 pu that are the same except for the output, one with more output is more dirty. Very high output stuff are very powerful and very dirty..low output stuff can be extremely clear(if good design, don't expect some lousy low out pu to sound clean). I like to put medium output stuff cause they can sound very powerfull with good overdrive, and can still be very clear and defined. Extremes are much harder to tame. It's hard to get good overdrive sound with something like low output Fender single coil, and almost impossible to get very clear and defined sound out od something like X2N. As far as V8,V7..they are not very high output but not so good design either so they sound a bit muddy. Tone Zone is more quality design but also more output..so result is more power with about same amount of muddyness. Altough DiMarzio and likes are more quality..they are not miracle makers..so high output still means much dirt too If muddyness bothers you get more quality designed pu with not much more output. I swapped V2 for Air Zone and got much more clarity, much more definition and even a tiny bit more power..cause it's better designed. And I heard a crazy advice(thanks JimmyJ) to put V2 in the neck..and as lousy it is in the bridge..in the neck is very nice(maybe V8 could also be nice in the neck?)
