Hello all...
As I was installing my
PAF Pros and SDS-1 single in my new RG 20th I realized something. Since I am still new to installing my own pickups I came to the conclusion that the proper orientation of the coils on a lot of humbuckers isn't always an obvious thing. The PAF Pros, for example, have identical pole pieces (like many DiMarzios), and therefore I am not sure how you know which way to turn them when installing.
I ended up installing both PAF Pros backwards. From what I understand, this won't affect the sound too much on these particular models, but it can and does affect the sound on certain others (DiMarzio has a listing of these somewhere).
My problem, however, is that I was out-of-phase with the single coil. So, I thought I would be cool and just reverse the black and white wires of the single instead of going through the trouble of physically reversing the humbuckers. Of course this worked, and the split 2 and 4 positions ended up sounding like they should... but they have 60 cycle hum.

So, I will have to go back in and reverse the humbuckers (like I should have in the first place) and wire the single back to normal.
How can you tell which is the right orientation from the get go when installing pickups like these?
