Pickup suggestion

Hi, im looking for another humbucking pickup for a parts build im doing. The body is mahogany and the other pickup ive got at the moment is a dimarzio fred. I dont know which posistion to use the fred in as ive heard people use it in neck or bridge, also i havent even heard what the pickup sounds like. So what would be a good match for this pickup?

cheers

Re: Pickup suggestion

yes they are a good combo, but even that I LOVE Tone Zone, I don't like it at all in mahogany

But if you tell us what kind of music and/or sound are you looking for we could help you more

Re: Pickup suggestion

ok, well the sound i would like would be something like paul gilbert. So the tone zone isnt very good in mahogany? Also i was thinking in wiring the neck pickup in parallel to get a cleaner sound

thanks

Re: Pickup suggestion

good combos:
Fred (B) + PAF Pro (N) or PAF Joe (N), I've prefer the first of these two

Norton (B) + Fred (N), this one is what I would go for if I were you.

Re: Pickup suggestion

Thanks for the suggestions, ive had a look at the ones you mention and i like the paf pro in the neck and fred in bridge so il probably go for that combo. Would you suggest wiring the paf pro in parallel?

cheers

as frodo says, wire the H-H with a megaswitch and use positions 2 and 4 for parallel, 1 and 5 for series and 2 x series in the centre postion.
its a great setup, a fellow jemsiter suggested it to me some time ago and its simply awesome with he range of sounds you get.

Re: Pickup suggestion

I got mine at allparts in the US. I think they're available in the UK. To be honest I don't think it will matter all that much (the brand of the switch).

edit: oops, mine's actually a 4-pole superswitch.

Since I have a HHH setup, I have it just with the more-or-less standard wiring as below
1 B both coils
2 B one coil, mid one coil
3 mid HH
4 N one coil, mid one coil
5 N both coils

Re: Pickup suggestion

I have two brands in stock, allparts ? brand - they work just fine and dimarzio of course which are a fair bit dearer but are manufactured by switchcraft ( I believe, someone may correct me) £15 and £28 respectively.
