Question

Pickup suggestion, please...

Hey there!

I'm rebuilding an 89 Yamaha RGX612S.
It's a wonderful super-strat from back in the hey days of shred.

Alder body, maple neck, rosewood board, 24,75" scale, Yamaha RM-Pro trem (which reminds me a lot of Ibanez's ZR).
However, it's going to be tuned down to C (standard C, not Drop-C) with .013 gauge strings.

That being, I'm not really sure on which pickup I should install on the bridge position.
I am leaning towards Evo 2, that I have on an RG470 and I love... but being a shorter scale and a deeper tuning, I'm not quite sure about where to get things going.

I really need some practical advice (not catalog reading please - e.g., Petrucci uses *** pickup; DiMarzio says *** pickup is good).

Let me know what you are using on your 6-string ERGs!

Cheers...

IT Sounds Like A Perfect Job For The EMG 81 Active Humbucking Pickup (With or Without) the EMG PA-2 Preamp Booster!

I Do Own A EMG 81, Actually I Put in The EMG KFK-Set (which Consists of A EMG 81 Bridge & EMG 85 Neck with the EMG PA-2 Preamp Booster)
in My Dean Black & Gold Z Model Explorer, which is also 24.75 Scale Length.

One Reason is the EMG 81 is Perfect is that it Has A "Narrow Apeture" String Sensing Area, which Means The Blade Polepieces,
(which are Two 'Blades' under the Cover Cap),
Are 'CLOSER' Together, than MOST Humbuckers that use Regular "Pole-Pieces" in A More Conventional Humbucker.

What This Means IS The EMG 81 "Sees" or Senses, A More 'Tighter',
'Less Muddy' String Attack than most conventional Humbuckers.

Its Tone Is Clear Full And RIPPING! Not"Trebly" either.
You Should Check out My Review of the EMG KFK Set on this Site, and on Harmony Central.
This Humbucking Pickup Set Can Do Wonders for your Guitar and Sound My Portugese Brother! ( as My Family Has A Lot of Portugese Ancestry & Relatives!)

The EMGs are a good choice. If you don't want to go with an active pup, consider the Seymour Duncan Parallel Axis Trembucker. Similar blade design to the EMGs and high output.

I'd say the EMG 81 would be a good pick, but if you don't want to worry about wiring active circuitry install a DiMarzio De-Activator bridge. It should be quite similar tonally to the EMG.

Yeah! You Are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! Yeah the Parallel Axis Distortion Trembucker Could Be Perfect. Not Only Because Its "Unique Polepiece Design", Has Less Magnetic String Pull, than Most Other Humbucking Pickups.

And The Crispy Clarity and Fast Ceramic Punch/Attack would Be Perfectly "Voiced" for The Super Heavy, Super Low "C" Down-Tuning" Dude is Planning On!
However the "Yamaha" Floyd-Esque Trem Bridge (If Im' Correct?!)

MAY Have Been One Of The Few "Floyd-Type" Bridges Manufactured back in the day That Had A Narrower "Gibson Humbucker" Style String Spacing, Rather Than "F" Fender/Floyd-Spaced Humbuckers!
if Im' Not Mistaken!

This is A Red Flag So to Speak for Crazy_Guitar To Take An Accurate Measurement of the Yamaha Trem Bridges "String Spacing" To See If It Actually IS "Gibson Spaced!?

Hey! Thanks for pointing that out! I have no clue regarding the string spacing...
I took for granted it was F-spaced/Trembucker.

WILL CHECK!
