Pickups / Coil Splitting / Yngwie sound ?

Hey guys !

Im having a think about changing the pickups in my RG1550GXW.
Ive used EMGs now for years, i find them great for high gain playing styles, but ive got an RG2610E with an EMG81 i use for most of my heavy stuff.

Considering getting a new scratchplate for the 1550 to house 3 single coils , as ive never really had that arrangement before. I was playing a strat on my distortion patches and was able to get a real good yngwie kindof twang, they sounded much wilder (and noisier..grrr) than the EMGs, with real nice clean sounds , which was cool.

Would it be the same, if i installed the usual humbucker-single-humbucker setup but had coilsplits? Like is that a fully fledged single coil when tapped? Ive heard some purists say its not the same. This Coil Tap appeals to me as i want as many different sounds as possible out of the guitar , but im not informed on the subject atall! I hear Petrucci used coil tapping to get his lovely clean sounds on "Pull Me Under". Would EMG single coils give that same stratty sound, or would their "EMG Sound" take over?

I had an Evolution and Tonezone in the 1550 before, i didnt like the evo atall, the tonezone was cool. After that i had a Seymour Duncan set - Distortion and Jazz Model , which were pretty cool. Any of you guys think trhere are particular pickups that coilsplit well?

Confusingly Yours,
Andrew

I dont think you can ever get an active pickup to sound like anything but an active pickup...but the single coils on the other hand my be total different.

petrucci uses coil tapping all the time, once you're used to hearing bucker vs single coil you hear it flipping all the time (for instance about 2:40 in strange deja vu)

All my humbucked guitar are coil split, i used to have an ibanez with active pickups that i split, but they weren't EMG,s. also on that guitar i had a switch so you could hit the battery, making the guitar active or passive. the active single coil sound i got sounded a lot like malmsteems sound.
