Re: Pickups in Mahogany body
I have Evo7 in my mahog K7...and it's wonderfull...great tone, extremly precise, and cleans extremly well..
Mahog tames down Evos high end, so it still sounds sharp and clear, but not ice pick sharp..
Two thumbs up for EVO in mahog..

Re: Pickups in Mahogany body
I'm getting an Evo7 in my next 7 string, as I had a spare Mahogany body lying about. Not sure what to go for in the neck though....
Air Norton
7??

Re: Pickups in Mahogany body
For a mahogany body, I don't think there's a better pickup than an EVO if you're into rock and metal.

Re: Pickups in Mahogany body
I love the TZ/AN combination in my Mahogany J-Custom...and Ibanez evidently does as well, since they use it in most of their
mahogany guitars
.
I don't really do 'heavy' though.

Re: Pickups in Mahogany body
Yeah, gotta love the
Tone Zone
. I'm not a big fan of the Air Norton, though. Personally, for a mahogany guitar I'd go with a Tone Zone in the bridge and an Air Zone in the neck.

Re: Pickups in Mahogany body
My RG321 is Mahogany, and I had a Duncan Screamin' Demon put in the bridge, and a Pearly Gates in the neck. The guy who put it in for me is a well known luthier, and he said that I couldn't have picked two better pickups for a mahogany body.
The Screamin' Demon isn't a high
output pickup
, but it has TONS of tone: screaming highs and growling lows. I'm sure the EVO would be great too, and I want to try it some day. But this is what I love for now.
I like Jemwielder's setup. I think a JB would sound awesome.

Re: Pickups in Mahogany body
now...what can i say...you guyz ROCK !!
so...here'z the real story for u...
I am getting a custom built guitar... H-S-H config in mahogany body.
I am looking for a combination which can be VERY VERY versatile..specially..clean sounds. BTW I am getting a peizo bridge.
I play dream theater sort of stuff...so...versatility is THE word.

Re: Pickups in Mahogany body
Well if that's the case, then just model your guitar after Petrucci's. My personal twist on the H-S-H config is to add a humbucking single coil in the middle and a multipole switch which essentially turns the guitar into an H-H-H config. Add a
piezo bridge
to that and the tonal possibilities are INSANE!

Re: Pickups in Mahogany body
If versatility is the key then I recommend putting 2 DPDT switches in on the humbuckers which allows them to run in series, parallel or
coil split
. I did this to my RG570 with my own custom wound pickups in it and it sounds awesome. 13 different sounds, all completely usable. Everything from clean funk tones through to full metal snarl. If you don't mind putting new holes in the front of the
guitar body
, I think its a mod that's well worth doing. Humbuckers in parallel mode sound very cool, clear and full, yet not quite as biting as asingle coil, but great for those Satriani-esque clean type riffs.
Cheers,
Dave

Re: Pickups in Mahogany body
So far Evo 7 in the bridge is looking popular and I'll probably stick to that but what about the neck then? Want something to complement it, so having a *7 string* Mahogany body your choice for a
neck pickup
would be?
