pickups for a solid mahogany guitar

I want to get a pickup best suited for a mahogany body on pickup surrounds. Ideally something for fast picked licks and passages for real individual notage. Like Paul Gilbert type of thing, Decent chunk but nice presence and cut. People talk about PAF's. What do you guys say?

The Gilbert Humbucker setup is the Tonez Zone in the bridge and the PAF Pro in the neck.
This is a great combo!

I have a mahogany explorer with a paf pro neck and a super distortion bridge. Being a huge racer x , Mr big and Gilbert fan I find it really nails the tone. The tone zone should get you there as well.

awesome thanks for that. Im building a mahogany destroyer/iceman hybrid like wot PG used with Bruce in Racer X. Some people say that these pickups can sound muddy in a mahogany body, not the case then?

I dont find them muddy. But of course thats all down to your amp, pedals and the way you play too.

I find the Tone Zone muddy in mahogany. Others have more luck than I do with that pickup and I think a lot of it has to do with the amp.

Re: pickups for a solid mahogany guitar

If you find the TZ muddy in mahogany.... Do what I'm doing!! I'm getting ready to put the AT1 in the bridge and a FRED in the neck. According to the DiMarzio website, the AT1 was designed for mahogany, it also has less bass than the TZ, statistically. I also happen to just love Andy Timmons' tone, and folks tell me I sound like him waaay too often .
I'm also going with the FRED because it is basically a "fatter" version of the PAF, but since you are going for the PG sound, you may want to stick with the PAF pro.

I've always like the sound of the JB/TB in mahogany guitars.

Re: pickups for a solid mahogany guitar

I wouldn't go with a Super distortion in the bridge, i've one in my schecter c-1+ elite and it sounds good but...just uninteresting. It can nail the older rock tones pretty well found in Gilbert and Ace Frehley. If i bother with putting new pickups in it, I would go with a TZ or maybe the AT1. PAF Pro sounds pretty good in the neck for leads and cleans though.

Tone Zone will probably be too muddy in mahogany. Go get the new Dominion, its designed for mahogany, and from what I've found in basswood is that it's like a tone zone perfected for darker tone woods. It doesn't have the boomyness like the TZ can have in darker tone woods, and the harmonics and dynamics are fantastic.

Imagine a Les Paul with Tone Zone in the bridge through a Mesa Recto...

Evo 2 and PAF Pro are my favourite in mahogany so far.

I really do have to try some of these Dominion's. By spec, they seem to be really nice.

Re: pickups for a solid mahogany guitar

Not too long ago, I recorded a bunch of sound clips for someone on this forum. Here's one for a Super 3 in a solid mahogany guitar if you're interested:

It's in D standard and Drop C. I was still getting great note definition all the way down to Drop A. I don't have recordings of that, though.
