Please Help: How to Test a Pickup??

Obviously I am not an Electrical Engineer (I just play one on TV). My newly acquired Jem's bridge pickup has no signal strength...it is very very faint. I know the switch is dirty and I am going to rewire the whole assembly this week and clean everything thoroughly. While I have it all apart, is there a way to test to see if the problem is with the pickup itself? Can I put a multimeter to the coils or the wires and see if it reads something....what do I do to test whether the pickup is good or bad????

Many thanks....Brad

Try to measure the Resistance... these are given on the Dimarzio site. The resistance of the coils in series should be the value given. Then trie the values of the separate coils. If one coil resistance is infinite, it is still able to give a signal, but this will lack low frequencies. Also check the wires... good luck!

Downloaded the wiring diagrams from here, bought an allparts five way and a new tip and rewired it all. Your testing hint worked as well so I new the pickup was good. Now she's quiet as a mouse and everything works as new. Love those Evo's!!!!!!!!!

a humbucker is nothing but 2 coils. A coil is a woundede wire. Check the resistance...Indeed even if one wire is broken you will receive some lower resistance. Check and compares the specs of the pup.
