Pots again and again
Hi Gus,
Sorry, but now I am really pissed off !
I know this subjet was arised 1,000 times before ,but I'll do that again, there must be some nice solution .
Rich, please pop in if you find a time ,but I didn't manage to find a pots on your spare parts list ?
Volume pot on my new Jem 7VWH was freeze (stacked) .
In local shop I replace it with the same valued 500 k pot .
Now,this is not anymore the same guitar.
Maximum volume with new pot has a power as only 50 or 60 % of original pot , tone is not anymore clear and bright, but rather dark, and the feell of it as the sound pass through rubber cloth .
There is no more distinctive difference in tone between 5 switch positions, whereas I had have 5 "different " guitars in one with original pot ,now it is very slightly difference .
Guy from local shop advised me to find original Ibanez Jem pot , it's only he can do .
He told me ,the new pot is high in quality and price ,made in usa ,so he dont understand why the tone and volume is so much changed.
Please help me somehow , to find (where to find ?) original Ibanez pot ,or to find the best pot money can buy ( is there such a pot ? )
Thanks a lot in advance,
Big Harry

Re: Pots again and again
I thought ibanez uses gotoh pots, I recommend dimarzio's pot, I tried em with gotoh before and the volume level and the signal were mad!!! The difference was huge, I'll be installing dimarzio's pot in all my guitar later on

Re: Pots again and again
ANY pot on 10 should be like a straight wire through, no resistance. If you don't have full volume then you still have resistance, or they screwed up the wiring on installation.

Re: Pots again and again
Thanks for popping in Rich (with bad news ,ha ha ha ) ,Ok I'll visit local shop again and bring them original wiring diagram .
mi2tom , lots of people told me dimarzio pots aren't the best one,so whom to believe ?
What about 1 meg volume , 500 k tone and .0.44 cap setup ,as per advice in this post ?
http://www.jemsite.com/forums/f35/ev...highlight=pots
Should I have more oomph with the same tone quality (as per original setup 500k,500k,0.22 cap ) ,or just a more and extremely bright tone coming up from Evo's ,cutting my Marshall in to two pieces ....

You know people, they are people and are hard to satisfy, if really a certain company lets say a dimarzio makes the best pickup in the world, people will be using dimarzios instead of other brand. IMO I've tried this two brand pots gotoh and dimarzio and I feel that the dimarzios are the better. And yeah rich answer is perfect

Re: Pots again and again
Guys,I hope it will helps to someone ,so there is short report about volume pot mystery :
I replaced volume pot again ,and there are a findings :
1. 7 vwh volume pot is linear (label " A " ) ,tone pot is logarithm ("B") ,so that was a first mistake ,when replaced original A with B pot.
2. Second, that wrong , log pot has resistance (measured) only above 400 k ,instead of 500 k . The proper one has 493 K . Tone starts only at 2,5 on scale from 1-10 at volume pot , with roper one ,I have sound immediately after move it from 1 .
More , now I,ve got a feeling as there is more Whoom , and more sharp definition (difference) in the tone and sound between five switch positions.
All in all ,I am again in the saddle .
The new pot is made by Switch Craft (or something like that ) .
Thanks for contribution .
