PUPS for RG370DX

I want to change the stock pups in my Ibanez RG370DX. I'm looking into,

1:
Breed Neck
Blue velvet Middle
Breed Bridge

2.
Air Norton Neck
Blue Velvet Middle
ToneZone Bridge.

Which configuration would be best? Thanking in advance.

Ali

Re: PUPS for RG370DX

to me the tone zone it like paul gilberts tone in a box , more so if you have a higher gain british flavored amp . it was definatly paf-ish sounding

i had a breed for a few days then i sold the guitar it was in . it was smooth , a little overly smooth for the sound i wanted . If you wanted to quiet out a harsh mid-ranged amp , say a jcm 800 that you can't crank or dont run any pedals in front of then the breed may be a little better suited for you . it does have some cool harmonics and it didn't really get flubby or muddy it was just overly smooth imo , and a little less precived output then i wanted . it was like a paf-style pickup but with natrual compression built in the pickup.

Re: PUPS for RG370DX

I read in a couple of placec that ToneZone's a bit muddy. Reason i'mt hinking about Breeds are because almost all of Magnus Olsons guitars are equiped with breeds. I have no idea how each pickup would sound as this would be my first experience changing the stock pups. I don't want a harsh sound, something like Satch/Petrucci. I could've gone for Evo's for bridge and neck, but then read that they sound really bad in basswood. I want a smooth fat sounding pickup that doesn't get think when palying higher registers and that also compliments legato.

Re: PUPS for RG370DX

Breed could be nice pick in way of sounding smooth fat..though have in mind that it is a bit "boomy" pu, bass is very strong and it's not extra defined on big chords. Also to me it seems that it does not respond 100% to the feel of the fingers(just 97% . It's not a bad pu surely and all those inperfect stuff are little enough to tolerate. TZ is a bit muddy on bigger chords, surely not too defined too, though on 2 note power chords that sounds "powerfull" and screams on individual notes..probably why lot of people like it. Consider Air Zone too, it has same qualities as TZ but with just a bit less power(still more powerfull that RG370 original pu) for which it gains a lot of definition and does not get muddy on distorsion at all, more refined sound. It is close to Breed also but a bit less "boomy" and 100% responding to picking. DiMarzio site market it as a vintage stuff, and in Les Paul samples they have it sounds like that..I have it in basswood RG and it's more "brown sound" like Van Halen. If you like Magnus Olson sound 100% then get Breed, everybody likes diferent so your ears are best advice..though I had Breed and it didn't sound like him..and had TZ and didn't sound like Paul G..effects and amp,and most of all fingers have much bigger effect..so don't expect to sound like him by putting pu in a guitar

Re: PUPS for RG370DX

I agree 110%, everything in your setup makes a whole lot of difference. So, what should I get then?
1. Evo's for neck and bridge and blue velvet or
2. Breeds for neck and bridge and blue velvent or
3. Tonezone for bridge, blue velvet and air norton for neck?

Re: PUPS for RG370DX

if your lookinf for a smooth pickup dont rule out the steve's speical , it is pretty smooth and is unique in the way it sounds and doesn't push your amp into overdrive . anyways just a thought

Re: PUPS for RG370DX

Easy way to figure out is to try it and see how you like it..or hear it in a similar setup as yours. It's hard to describe sounds with words. Problem is that there is no perfect combination..every one has its good and bad points. So my advice is to write starting 1) 2) 3).. what is most important to you in sound, and also bad things that you can tolerate still(like is it ok for a pu to be little muddy,or have piercing highs,or lot of bass..)...so then someone with experience can give you a good suggestion..or else people would only tell you what they like..and there are 100 opinions
As for Evo..bridge Evo is a dangerous toy..very sensitive pu..you have to have amazing skill and setup(think Vai) and then they sound great..if not they will sound much worse than Breed or TZ. I like AN pretty much, though TZ and Breed high output without noise gates and expensive amps and other equipement just makes too much noise..

Re: PUPS for RG370DX

Thing most people do..in search of "power" they get too high output pu for their setup and that "power" on a budget 500$ amp just sounds like noise. Of course Mr Vai can tame all that noise and turn it to sheer power on his million dollar equipement with all noise gates and stuff..but wonder why he used Paf Pros(much less powerfull) in his early days? I gave same advice to my friend who didn't listen cause "he needs power..he wanna sound like Petrucci"..he got TZ and now he says "But it's muddy..noisy..not like Dream Theater"..what would you expect on 500$ Marshall VS100 amp damnit?? It's like trying to be Formula 1 driver and you don't have money to buy a Ferrari F1, but enough for engine..so you put 500KW Ferrari engine in..Toyota Yaris..and the car brake! If without very expensive noiseless setup..on Evo(bridge),TZ,Breed expect some noise..just a warning

Re: PUPS for RG370DX

I say try the Evo2 bridge ( smoother of the Evo`s) Blue velvet middle and Evo neck.

I have this in my 1570 and it`s enough UMPH without being over the top

Re: PUPS for RG370DX

JimmyJ you amaze me with your wisdom!..although you can't even pronounce your surname correctly..Paf Pro bridge will give you nice defined distorted ryhtm sound and nice solo sound..and when you get angry at the world..TZ neck will shake the walls
