Putting RG170 pups into an old strat
Hey guys. For the last few months I've been slowly working on a new paint job for this Strat copy, that's all done. Now I need to wire the sucker. My friend gave me his pups out of his RG170dx, 2 'buckers and a single, but I'm only putting two humbuckers in this one (leaving the single out) I've got all his old pots which still have wires soldered on. I bought myself a 3 way switch I just need to know what colours go where.
Currently the red and whites on the pickups are twisted and soldered together, leaving black, green, and the grey thing.
Help would be Greatly appreciated

Re: Putting RG170 pups into an old strat
red and white should be ground and the grey one should be too, black and green might be the hot to each coil
go to any pup site and you can get pretty detailed diagrams....but what kind of pups are they, stock...???? i would suggest moving up from stock, the sound wont be all that great

Re: Putting RG170 pups into an old strat
They are stock Powersound pups. I'm not aiming for perfect sound, this guitar is just a little project thing. I most likely wont use it too often

Re: Putting RG170 pups into an old strat
This is just going off instinct and how popular wiring tends to be (a Dimarzio I tossed in an Ibanez was wired this way). I'd think green and bare should be soldered together on the volume pot. And the black would go to the
pickup selector switch
. The red and white soldered together, leave them be if you don't care about splitting the coils. Doesn't hurt to try, if you're comfy soldering. Good luck.

Re: Putting RG170 pups into an old strat
Is there any possible damage if I have them back to front??
More concerned about the amp then the guitar
ok I found this
If i'm reading it right, the black is soldered with the bare onto the pots.
Ive been following this diagram
http://www.seymourduncan.com/support...ic=2h_1v_1t_3w
Which has the green soldered with the bare.
The old pots still have wires soldered on, Im thinkin of just de solderin and following the seymour diagram.

Re: Putting RG170 pups into an old strat
this is only okay if you are using sd pups
for the most part if you really mess up the wiring you can demagnetize the pups, but thats in extrme circumstance, and ive never done that
anything else just wires it out of PHASE, and changes the sound, wont harm anything persay

Re: Putting RG170 pups into an old strat
Ok I had some trouble wiring, I couldn't get the two humbuckers to work. So I tried an EVH set up, just one humbucker and the volume pot, and she works fine. So I think I know what the problem was, so Ill fix that tommorow morning.

Re: Putting RG170 pups into an old strat
dont keep resoldering the pots too much.
if you get them too hot you can melt the conductors inside....im always very carful with this kind of stuff
let me know what you did wrong im curious, ive messed up on wiring tons of times...darn millions of wires in a guitar!
