Rewire JS1600 to Seymour-Duncan

Hi everybody!
I want to rewire my Ibanez JS1600 from DiMarzios to Seymours. But still with the same Coil-tap and Hi-pass push pull options. This is first time i deal with pickups. Need advice.

I've selected SH-2n and SH-4 for my taste. To me it seems like they sound better with mahogany than DiMarzios.

As i see in the listing they have 4-conductor versions of them. Is it enough just to resolder everything using a Color-Difference chart?

yep the color codes are different put it is exactly the same otherwise.

the coil tap on the dimarzio pickup is white and black, on seymour duncan it is red and white.

the hot lead for dimarzio is red, for seymour duncan it is black.

green and bare are the same for both companies.

So

dimarzio = seymour duncan

red = black
white = white
black = red
green = green
bare = bare

yep looks like had them backwards

white = red
black = white

would have still worked but i think instead of being in series in the down position it would have been in parallel . So backwards of the way it is now.

Anyways i do think that link you have is right.

Well if tthe color difference with white and black is about being in series or parallel, how i will know what the original wiring with dimarzios was?

just use the color code diagram to switch the dimarzio wire with the seymour duncan wire and you will be fine.

Just be carefull and if you can only undo one wire at a time and swap it out with the other. If that is not possible go here

How should i know if the inner coils are tapped when i pull tone know to single coil mode?

so which coil will you ground out ?

if you look at a dimarzio pickup face up with the lead wires on the bottom right hand side the coil you will be getting sound from should be the on the top side.

the easy way to tell which coil is to tap the coils with a pick or small screw driver.

the more technical way is to look at what wires are going to what terminals. A push/pull pot is a double pole double throw switch meaning the following

you have a total of 6 terminals that look like

the center terminal is your ouput terminal and in this case both central terminals will have the coil tap wire. the bottom two terminals or the two closest to the left dont have anything soldered on them meaning nothing is being connected to them while the pot is in the down position(normal operation). When pulled up the top two terminals are engaged. These two terminals are wired to the ground meaning that you ground out the second coil.

I guess the last question is:
Is it ok if i flip around the according seymour as the stock dimarzio is?

I always thought they cannot be flipped as the magnets are ment to work with according strings

So they can be flipped?

I have just checked my JS1600
The DiMarzio logo on the pickups tells me that they are not flipped. It is aligned closer to bridge side on both pickups

you can flip any standard pickup around.


Depending on the pickup you could get a very different sound. The dimarzio d-sonic sounds very different with the bar to the bridge side versus the bar to the neck side.

It really depends on the pickup and which way either coil of the humbucker is wound.

For the most part you wont notice just a ton of difference either way, but like i said some pickups it makes a large difference.

Just got my Duncan Hot Rod set. These are standard spaced pickups and now i see that that this guitar nees f-spaced pickups

The SH-2n standard sized fits the strings very good but SH-4 is already gone for a replacement to TB-4

Well you didn't have to have f-spaced. The pole pieces don’t have to be aligned with the strings as long as they aren't too far off. The magnet in pickup puts off a field greater than just the face or pole pieces of the pickup.

A pickup works when the string's vibration in the magnetic field induces a current in the copper windings of the pickup.


anyways it is best to try and get the poles lined up if you can just because it give you the ability to focus more or less on individual strings but it is certainly not essential.

i've just read that starting from 53mm of spacing between strings the f-spaced must be used. JS1600 with Gotoh fixed bridge has 53mm

At last, i have installed SH2n and TB-4 on my JS1600. I'll post some soundclips tonight when i get back home.

What i just felt wrong is that, SH2n felt to me very bassy... maybe scooped... Don't know if it's my ears or my taste

Maybe i've soldered it wrongly... Anyway, i'll be glad to hear your advices and opiniions.
