RG Duncan bridge pup to Evo:meh..

I really hate to admit I'm wrong about this but, a freind of mine has a really nice RG550 that came stock with a Seymour Duncan bridge pup.It only said BJ(not JB) on the back and sounded fine.I'd talked up the Evo before so he decided to pick one up.Although it sounded good I can't say it was a success. We listened back to a recording of the guitar with the orignal Seymour and it sounded amazingly full and toneful. The leads weren't as pronounced as the Evo but they were warmer and crunchy as F*#K! I have offered to pay for the mistake but my friend has been bitten by the Evo bug.

Re: RG Duncan bridge pup to Evo:meh..

I'm not a huge fan of the original EVO, it can sounds quite small. Vai gets around this by playing very loud, he also uses a 250K volume pot to smooth out the highs some and make it sound rounder. But, most people in band situations can't get by with playing at the volume Vai can.

I like the EVO2 much more, it seems to take all the good points from the original and adds some warmth. The Breed also sounds very good and is quite a bit warmer and rounder sounding.

I'll have to look into the Evo II and I've always wondered about this 250k pot thing. Right now I'm checking out a vintage OBL(Original Bill Lawrence) humbucker. It should really benefit from the 250k, top-end roll off. Some players even talk up these 350k and 330(?)pots. Thanks!

something that compares to the JB in the Dimarzio selection would be a Norton or a Mo' Joe.

The Evo is much more compressed and has a more dominant top end.

Are there any other marking on the bottom of the Duncan? What's the Ohm reading?

I always used a 250K tone pot on my Evo in a Basswood body...it still killed the upper mid enough to be useful and still slayed you.

I do like the EvoII better....same tone more reigned in
