RG1570 Dimarzio TZ/AN need single coil advice
I’ve upgraded the humbuckers on my
RG1570
to Dimarzio Tonezone and Air Norton and playing through my Line 6 Spider Jam, the sounds that I’m getting are quite simply................beautiful! Also, they seem to be matched perfectly, when I switch between the two the volume stays the same, not so when I use the standard centre single coil though, there’s a noticeable volume drop. Any recommendations for a replacement single coil pickup to sit in-between the Tonezone and air Norton would be appreciated. I play a lot of rock and the TZ /AN are perfect but I’d like a nice bluesy tone from the single coil.

any of the velvets (blue, red, true) reverse wounded, or HS-2 in singlecoil reversed wiring

Re: RG1570 Dimarzio TZ/AN need single coil advice
If you really want a middle single that's balanced in volume, you need to look at the output (in millivolts) for your humbuckers. That's what I did with my PGMs and it worked out pretty well.
The Tone Zone is 375 mV and the Air Norton is 270 mV. For that output range, I would suggest a Dimarzio Chopper which as 260 mV of output. I've got that pickup in one of my PGMs, in the middle position, and it worked out nicely. It still has some of that single coil tone but it's really fat.

Re: RG1570 Dimarzio TZ/AN need single coil advice
It's a JEM single coil, I don' tknow if these can be ordered separately from DiMarzio or not, but an HS3 wired in single coil mode is supposed to be a very close match.
BUT I think there's a big drop in output between a JEM's pickups so it might not be the best choice, toneboy's advice about the Chopper might be on the money for you.
I personally love the drop in output as it really cleans up the tone when changing pickups.

The Blue Velvet is a stunning pup imo, if you want a s/coil in the middle to balance, you'll be grabbing a stacked/railed humbucker which can limit your sound choice, essentially 3 humbuckers.
The pup that comes with the Evo and Breed equipped Jems is purchasable however it's a product code (without pulling it from my AM it's kinda ICVS ***) try a quick google.

Re: RG1570 Dimarzio TZ/AN need single coil advice
Having a volume drop in positions 2, 3 & 4 is the way an HSH configuration is supposed to work, but it seams that you don't like it that way you will need a very hot pickup in the middle (very hot for a singlecoil sized pickup), something like Fast Track 2 should work, but you will need to change your pickup selector to something like a mega switch or you will loose your stratish quak sound in positions 2 & 4.

I just bought a Blue Velvet for my custom jem. I'm wiring it up with a SS in the bridge
and an EVO in the neck. I bought it off **** and I thought it was a reverse wound but
to my surprise it's not. Does that mean I'm going to get a lot of buzz in the 2 and 4
position? What about if I'm playing clean, will there still be a buzz?

Not if you reverse wire it you shouldn't, i'm a little out of the wiring side of things, but i'll double check it when i get a free moment

Exactly, all you should do is reverse wire your SS and your EVO

Ok, I'm kinda new to the whole wiring thing. I've downloaded this diagram from
jemsite (
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/1236/jemdiagram1.jpg
). My pups
have 4 wires and a shield. Red, white, black, green and shield. In the diagram the
Green and Shield go to the ground. The white and black which are grouped together
and the red both go to the 5 way. I'm guessing I would just reverse where the red and
the black and white combined go? Right?

Re: RG1570 Dimarzio TZ/AN need single coil advice
It's not that easy. An RWRP pickup is not only wound backwards but the magnets are also opposite in polarity.
If making a pickup function as an RWRP was as easy as just reversing two wires, they wouldn't bother making versions that are wound differently and have their magnets' polarity flipped. All that's going to happen when you flip the wires is the middle pickup will be out of phase with the neck and bridge pups. What you'll need to do, which may be a little tricky, is to flip the magnets upside down
