Rg550 pickup change, can't decide
my god i havent posted in a while. ive been surfing the forums regularly but my last post was ages ago. i kinda miss it
anyways i need your help guys. I've decided to change the pickups on my Rg550mxx but i cant choose the pickups. I've narrowed it down to 2 neck pickups and 2
bridge pickups
Neck: Breed neck or Air Norton
Bridge: Breed bridge or D-Sonic
I play a lot of progressive and shred (this is why i'm considering the D-Sonic and Air Norton), but i also need a pickup that can clean up nicely and is good for jazz-fusion tones (thus the breeds. I heard
Magnus Olsson
a long time ago and i still melt at his tone). What do you guys think? If you have other suggestions then please tell. Thank you anyways
Edit: After reaching page 100000 in the search results, i found a thread comparing the neck pickups i asked about and i think i'm going for the breed neck. I still can't find enough info/sound clips to compare the breed bridge and the D-sonic though

My group also does prog and some shred stuff, but I went with the
Tone Zone
, great articulation, good cleans and leads from that pickup. Sadly, I'm not too familiar with the D-sonic.

Re: Rg550 pickup change, can't decide
I have a Breed neck and D-Sonic in my 550DX...
the breed neck sounds great for jazzy tones when you turn the volume/tone to 7-ish
I've only had a D-Sonic for a few weeks and so far, I have yet to find something bad about it. It's not a one-trick pony as it sounds mean as it looks but its versatile enough to have a "clean" and almost sparkly tone... Last time I tried a
Breed Bridge
was on a JEM7DBK and it sounded like a hotter
Paf Pro
[which is what it is???], not quite heavy for my tastes

Re: Rg550 pickup change, can't decide
I think i have gone through every thread on this site that has anything to do with the D sonic and the Breed bridge today. I think i need them both lol. Would you say the D-sonic is able to pull off some jazz fusion licks ala greg howe? i mainly use the
neck pickup
for soloing but sometimes i like switching to the
bridge pickup
for a brighter sound

Howe's tone is too mellow to have a D-sonic in the setup...
The D-Sonic has a modern voice to it and too hot for a jazzy-tone like Howe's although i'd assume he uses a lo- or mid-gain p/u's like a Paf Pro on the bridge... However, it has some "spunk" and cleans up nicely and with the volume knob rolled down.
Maybe a Breed bridge could be closer if that's the sound you're achieving. I can try to make clips of some D-sonic clean tones when i get the chance...

Re: Rg550 pickup change, can't decide
Thank you very much
but you dont have to. i'll get to try an rg prestige equipped with a D sonic the next few days so that'll give me an idea of what a D sonic would sound using my rig. The only problem i have left is knowing what a breed would sound like distorted, i.e would it be able to pull off some heavy riffing (not
death metal
-heavy. just symphony x and the such)

Re: Rg550 pickup change, can't decide
I love the breed in the bridge for creamy solo tones. I also like the
air norton
in the neck but have not paired these pickups in the same guitar. In any case, the breed roars and the air norton is sweet and clean.

I put an EvoII in my RG20th blk and now plan to put one in my RFR version. Paf Pro for the neck always for me

I've been thinking about the combo you decided to go with. Let us know how you fair with them.

Re: Rg550 pickup change, can't decide
screamndemon, ill post a review when i get them. i cant wait for them to arrive but it's going to take a while. probably in March.
Crazy_Guitar, i tried this combo on my friend's Rg2570 and altho it was great, i didn't find the Air Norton suitable for my taste, and the D-sonic's cleans/overdrive werent what i was looking for. I already ordered now. All that's left is the long hard wait..

Go with the D-Sonic Air Norton. They will cover a lot of ground and the AN in the neck can do great jazz.
