Seymour Duncan P-Rails?

anybody try these out?

they seem really really cool. It's a P-90 and a Cool Rails pickup slammed together.

You can run both coils together for a humbucker, or split either coil for a strat tone or a P-90 tone.

read about it here: http://www.seymourduncan.com/product.../prails_shpr1/

see the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZhJXcSVnfs

can anybody (especially you frank falbo) tell me how good these sound for rock or fusion? seems like everybody who are picking them up are just vintage guys playin blues.

Re: Seymour Duncan P-Rails?

Well, since you called me out, I'll answer in the most objective manner I can. The vintage guys are in love with them for the P90 and "rock" humbucker tones. But there are some guys posting threads about how it's a valid Humbucker sound in it's own right.

Here's what I can say about the rock/fusion guys: If you're normally impressed with a Dimarzio Air Norton in the neck, and either a Norton or Air Zone in the bridge, you will be very happy with these humbucking tones. It's hard to say that over on the Duncan forum, and the truth is, we're not targeting those pickups or Dimarzio at all with the P-Rails. But the hard part is, I know that Dimarzio guys will dig the sound of these humbuckers, I just have no good way of spreading the word.

The bridge HB has a Fred/Norton-ish midrange, but is very wide ranged overall. It's almost like what Dimarzio describes the Tone Zone to be, but many who try the TZ find it too thick and congested. The P-Rails get a more "Seymour Duncan" treble and attack. It does not feel like an Airbucker of any kind; the attack is immediate and crisp. So for a fusion guy that is buried behind effects and Holdsworthian overdrive, that part will either go unnoticed, or could actually be a hinderance. If that's the case, go with 250k pots, or a Dimarzio.

The "inside coils" like on a Petrucci wiring, or one of Ibanez' H/H 5-ways are super clean and glassy, moreso than an AN/TZ mix, and would be great for funk and fusion comping, or processed "hypercleans" with modulation and effects.

I'd love to hear response from anyone who's tried them too.

these things look really cool. If I wasn't already content with the setups and quantity of guitars I have in my collection I might think about ordering a couple.

Re: Seymour Duncan P-Rails?

I just installed them in my Yamaha YG. I actually Disconnected the stock single coil and replaced the 5-way blade with a three way blade and 3-way dip switch to access the pick-ups 3 sounds. I was skeptical until I installed them. All 3 sounds are amazing. The humbucker sound though, sounds better than any humbucker I have played. It's a hot, clear tone that can due anything from jazz to metal. The P-90 sounds are great and the single-coil sounds are great too!!!I sold my Dimarzios and John Suhr pickup that was originally in the guitar and recently ordered a cream set for my new ESP EC-256. My Yamaha is now my Swiss Army Knife Guitar. I'm just going to use the P90/Humbucker modes for my ESP though since the Yamaha will be my "Strat". Awsome,Awesome,Awesome!!!!

Re: Seymour Duncan P-Rails?

I put a pair in my S2120XAV and I'm very pleased. This is a Double-edge axe and I was never 100% happy with its QM pickups.
I agonized over how to wire the thing - to get the best options from the 5-way switch. In the end, I'm pleased with my selections.

Re: Seymour Duncan P-Rails?

Hi everybody!
I want to replace my stock pickups (P.A.F.s) on my Tokai Les Paul with P-Rails neck and Drop Sonic bridge. I like my neck pickup and I expecting P-Rails to sound similar to it, but I don't know if it will. Please, if anyone tried it before - tell me if it would. The other thing I want to know is about combo with D-Sonic. How good is that combo and would they match?
