Silver wire between EMG pots not long enough :(
Hey everyone,
I bought a emg 81 some weeks ago, and i'm going to put it in now, but i have noticed that the silver wire that goes between the pots (not the black covered one), that has the green thing half way down the line isnt long enough to reach so i can put the pots in , its out by about 1cm.
How can i extend this wire and how should i go about doing it.
I hope my message made sense. I've installed passives before but not actives.
regards,
daniel

HI there,
I'm not familliar with the wiring in question, but is it possible to replace the wire ? If not just solder a new wire to the end. Seems easy ?
Greets!

I've done this with two RGs. Just get rid of that wire and replace it with a longer wire. You can use some insulated wire from memory too so then it's protected more.

Get some wire from your local hardware store and extend it, as long as its insulated you are ok, i personally wouldnt even try replacing a pickup wire from the pickup end in case you melt it with the iron. Just solder an extra bit of wire onto it.

lol i am a bit thick today... the green thing is a capacitor (doh).
heres a pic
the amount of slack on that thing is rediculous....
the black wire might reach ... tho i hope i dont have to extend that one too -.-

Yeah, youll have to extend the Capacitor wire, just solder another bit to it, same with the black one. Its best to use insulated wire to be on the safe side.

i'm a electronics noob... what happens if you dont use insulated wire? and whats the difference visually? just a coating or casing like a passive's black wire tubing before you take out the coloured wires to solder or something else...?

Re: Silver wire between EMG pots not long enough :(
Right. Take notes, there will be a test at the end.
The wires insulation colours make no difference to sound or tone, its basically so we can distinguish between live and neutral, e.g Red = Hot/positive, Black = cold/Negative. Its important to insulate them so they dont touch and cause a short circuit between components such as the capacitor and pots.
So just to recap - the colour of the insulation is so we/you can easily find out whether they are postive/negative or other.
Its best to have everthing insulated as it cuts down the chance of a short circuit and also can shield from noise.

Right, thanks for the info.
Chances are when my father gets back hell probably know some of this electronics stuff already, he does enough electronics work for car related stuff at work.
I guess i didnt want to take his knowledge for granted :P

Re: Silver wire between EMG pots not long enough :(
Make sure to "tin" your connections before you start to solder bits together. Thats basically putting some solder on the ends your gonna solder together, this cuts down the chance of burning out components.

Re: Silver wire between EMG pots not long enough :(
Ok will do, chances are ill probably come back here if i have any questions about installation, but i'm sure i have it 99% down anyway as far as where i'm soldering stuff. the only thing i might be wrong about is the switch but thats easy to fix and find out if i get it wrong once.
