So, i modded my stock ibanez pickups!

i already posted this thread on sevenstring.org, but i didnīt care to rewrite, so i copy/pasted it... thought you guys would love this aswell :P

--------------------

so i thought hey, letīs have some fun! one night, and decided to unmount my trem on my 6 string RG, and mess with the pickups... Both pickups are stock, so i thought hey, why WOULDNīT i mess withīem!? :P

this is what i did...

Neck Humbucker:

Removed the screw-coil holder, so the screw-coils donīt make direct magnetic contact with the magnet... makes it semi-Air-bucker... sounds great!

then i removed three polepieces from the coil closest to the bridge... the three pole pieces were the ones under the three thickest strings. now i get a really really clear single-coil-ish sound on these strings, like i always wanted, BUT itīs noiseless, in that it still removes hum...

for the three treble strings, i replaced the three polepieces off the same coil with Gibson covered humbucker-style golden screw coils (the other ones are the hexagonical whateveryoucallit type coils), and these sit really deep down inside the coil, so they are far away from the strings...

result: neck humbucker sounds AMAZING compared to before!
i would recommend removing the pole pieces from the three bass strings on the neck humbucker to anyone who is sick of muffled boomy sounding stock pickups... if you donīt like the change, you just screw the suckers back in! :P

Bridge Pickup:

didnīt do too much here, i replaced the three pole pieces under the three brightest strings from the coil that is closest to the neck, and raised the pole pieces up closer to the strings on the three strings closest to the bridge, on the coil that is closest to the bridge...

result: brighter bass-strings, softer treble strings, overall more suited to my playing style with 6-strings... itīs now capable of smoother softer solos and more cutting low strings... very nice...

the guitar is tuned to drop C with REALLY thick strings, a .56 for the C, and i donīt remember what the rest were, but really tight... really works well for this guitar though :P (although adjusting the floating trem to these strings in that tuning was FARKING HELL!)

so, what do you all think? :P anyone up for a little pickup modding or anything like that then?

Hmmm... very interesting...

One of the new things I've noticed is to mess around with pickups in an unorthodox way.

Take some pics next time and go into some more detail (you did a pretty good job), because subtle differences can really make a difference in pickup performance.

Think of it as a pickup modification tutorial.

I made some fun mods too, I interchange one coil from the V7 with one from the V8, to make a hybrid set... and after that the V7-H (the pickup with the screw-coil and magnet from the V7) turns to a very nice neck pickup, something like a and Evolution Neck, but a little brighter and weaker.

I hadn't have the same luck with the V8-H, but I've bough an AlNiCo 8 magnet to try there, so when it arrives I'll give you my results.

i´ll make sure to take pics or something like that when i mod my buddy´s pickups next, on his iceman... if he has pickups without glued magnets (i hate that! :P), we´ll be changing the magnets around too...

so yeah, more will come :P
