Can you be a little more specific about what kind of sounds are you looking for?

Well Steve Vai uses Evolutions in his guitars (which are alder), Petrucci uses Steve's Special bridge Air Norton Neck in a basswood body, and Satriani uses Fred bridge Paf Pro and more recently Paf Joe in his neck in a basswood.

All 3 have very different sounds. For a nice lead rythem, a Fred or a Evo is good. I have mixed feelings about the Steve's Special.

I think a good combo will be:
Pro Track (DP18 or The Chopper (DP184) in the neck
The Cruiser Neck (DP186) in the middle
Evolution Bridge (DP159) in the bridge

but there are others as good as this two, if you can geve me a more specific desciption of what you are looking for, for example the usage of each of your 5 pickups switch configs and so...

Hey thx for your view on this erm i would like normal switching on it i think 5 way, 1 vol 1 tone 1 switch to coil split the evolution. I also mail'd the dimarzio staff. They told me this:
>
>An F-spaced Evolution might be good, depending on the type of amplifer you
>play. You might like a Pro Track (DP18 in the neck position and a Fast
>Track 1 (DP181) in the middle. To install in a Soloist, these two pickups
>will need to be special-ordered with no flange.
>

What does this no flange thingy mean ?

thx for your help,
Wiebren

Flange is the shape i assume ... soloist's in general have an oval s/coil route, whereas Dimarzio use the triangle shaped baseplate which no fit

Just order your said pickups from DiMarzio direct and request an oval base plate

I'd be very tempted to go for the following ... PafPro bridge ... Blue Velvet/Blue Velvet

Or Jackson pups J50c J200 J200 with a JE1800 mid boost

HTH

Im not sure how it would sound in alder, but I love the sound of the tone zone in mahogany. You might want to look into that.
