Re: Steve's Special and PAF pro
I hear the Steve's Special is very good in Mahogany. It theoretically stays clean and sharp without mudding up.
I'm putting one in my RG tomorrow, I'll let you know in a few days how I feel about it
As for the PAF Pro, I too thought about it for a
neck pickup
. I think I'm going to try the
Air Norton
first, and if I'm not happy with it, I'll go for the PAF Pro next.

Re: Steve's Special and PAF pro
Wow, I ordered the same exact combo last week for my mahogany PRS Santana SE. I will definitely let you know how it goes.
Nowhere had the color combo of the PAF Pro I wanted, so I had to special order it. Expect two weeks before I get them installed. I WILL post a nice little review and some clips though
.

Re: Steve's Special and PAF pro
Steve's Special in my RG520 sounds sweet as hell! Imo, it sounds much better than the TZ I started with.. notes are very clear doesnt get muddy
it sounded "different" though like compared to how my TZ sounded like but after an hr or two of playing, im gonna say that these pups arent coming out
im running it through: RG520QS -->
EHX Metal Muff
--> Laney AOR3012 Series 2 Amp
awesome pickup!!

Probably the mid-scoop the SS is known for. I've heard a lot of people say it can take a while to get used to.
There is something you can do to get another sound out of it, but that public service announcement is reserved for frankfalbo
Glad to hear you're enjoying it though, I still haven't gotten to getting it in my RG

Re: Steve's Special and PAF pro
How does the sound change when flipped?
SS sounds good in mahogany. Not as hi-fi as in basswood (if that's your thing). Still clear.

Re: Steve's Special and PAF pro
Supposedly it sounds brighter one way, and darker the other.
I
believe
it sounds brighter with the leads closer to the electronics, and darker with the leads facing the upper horn (Assuming your playing a right handed guitar that is
).

Re: Steve's Special and PAF pro
To keep you all updated, my PAF Pro will be shipped tomorrow, so hopefully this weekend, I can wire the mahogany PRS up with the SS/PAF
Pro combo
and post a mini review.

They said that the product was indeed in stock, and as soon as my order was placed and the money withdrawn, the inform me that the product is OUT of stock, and won't be in till February.
Not only did they do that, but they held my money for a good two weeks, and then I finally got it back. Next, I had to wait another two weeks for another vendor to custom order the damn thing (since when have black/creme pickups been so odd?).
Finally, I got a shipment notification yesterday. Yippee...
