Strange hum on EMGs

I did the 18v mod and it did create a little more noise as expected but then suddenly the buzzing got really loud Everytime I touch the strings with my palm, the strings hum even more, and they hum even louder when I push the down closer to the pickup.

Help

Re: Strange hum on EMGs

sounds like a grounding problem...

triple check all your wiring and wiring diagram to make sure nothing came loose or is touching something else.

Re: Strange hum on EMGs

Thats what I thought, but EMGs aren't grounded. I checked it, and everthing seems well.

I doubt it, but the pot is really really old and scratchy, could that possibly cause it?

Re: Strange hum on EMGs

Hmmm... that is strange.

Was there a noticeable hum before you did the mod?

Man, I have no idea...

Must be something with the wiring, or it could be a bad pot. I might have a good one laying around here I could send to you and you could try that.

Re: Strange hum on EMGs

I dont know if this will help or not but I just installed a Kerry King set and had the same problem. Looked close at the diagram and it required me to ground both the 85 and 81 to the volume pot. That fixed it. I think EMG says that they require almost no grounding.

Peace

Re: Strange hum on EMGs

That's strange, I've done the 18 volt mod in one of my axes with no problems. I just did the linked up 3 battery clips si I can reverse it and no noise either way.

Re: Strange hum on EMGs

okay, I switched the bridge and the neck pup, and I confirmed that only one of the pickups is buzzing.

I returned back to using a single 9v, and there is still hum.I also put in a fresh battery.

One piece of information that might be significant is that I only had that one 85 by itself without the neck pickup for a while, while it was on the 18v mod. Could this have damaged it?

Re: Strange hum on EMGs

Okay, so one of the pickups is new.... did you check to make sure the quik-connect plug is going the right way on the new pickup?
