stuck on a neck pup

Ok i decided to put an evo into the bridge of my RG470.
but what neck pup??
i dont really like the idea of an air norton as i have heard its quite thick sounding and im after a neck pup that wont muddy up at high gain, i thought the humbucker from hell but that seems too low output, i think im either going for a PAF Pro or maybe a FRED.
Im looking for something with reasonable output, good clear but not harsh sound at high gain that would suit for shred type stuff.

i mainly use the neck for soloing and postition 4(neck + middle) for clean

Um, it may have the reputation as being "quite thick sounding" BECAUSE it doesn't "muddy up at high gain." Personally, I've never heard it called that- i've always thought the one in the neck of my 7620 had a very clear, almost single-coil like crystalline tone to it, very open and responsive. Think John Petrucci picking a million notes a second- it lends itself nicely to that, although back off the volume knob a hair and it gives you some wonderful satch-y bluesiness, too.

I could see an AN/Evo combo being quite good.

Ditto.....I have the AirNorton in the neck of my 520 and it sounds very much like a loud single coil. I was jamming Bridge of sighs on it yesterday and it rocks.

I've compared the PAF7 and the AN7 and prefer the PAF7 if that helps

I don't know if you can still get them but the Duncan Full Shred neck model was a great pickup. I have one in a Radius. Sort of a Music Man EVH/Air Norton sound. They are shiny so they don't match the Dimarzios perfectly but they have the allen poles. But to me anyway, the sound is exactly what you are describing.

i'm a firm believer in the Full Shred- it's my fav neck humbucker- clear, no-mud + good with high gain settings. yup, you can still get 'em off the shelf.

i'm also into Dimarzio's Super2, IMO it's the equivalent of the full shred. however, it has a tamer mid-range & sounds 'smoother' than the duncan.

I have a Super 2 that is in a bridge position and all you guys talking about it as a great neck pickup is making me want to try it. Hooray for the F.S. neck still being available.

I have a PAF Pro with a Bridge Evo in my 520 and I love them together.

I'm even thinking of swapping out the Super Distortion in the bridge of my old 550 for an Evo, I have a PAF Pro in the neck for that one too.

Personally I like the PAF Pros for the neck, they are loud, but not over powering, clean up nice and when split they have a nice single coil tone to them.
