Suggest a pickup!

Hey guys,

I have an Ibanez RGT42FX and a Mesa Mark IV widebody combo. I am going for John Petrucci's tone from the Liquid Tension Experiment era. Would the Steve's Special or Tone Zone help me achieve this tone? Remember, the Ibanez RGT42FX is a neck through maple guitar with mahogany body wings. Thanks!

JP's tone has always been VERY neck pickup heavy and the Mark IV is the perfect amp to achieve his tone with. I would suggest a Steve Special in the bridge and more importantly an Air Norton in the neck, as for me that gives the closest tone to his (his neck pickup tone is my favorite tone of all). Make sure that you use slight vibrato at all times and pick slightly more towards the neck to achieve his tones. Be smooth!

yep JP uses the neck pickup a lot for the smoother stuff and will switch between bridge and neck A LOT . the mark 4 has quite a bit of gain and smoother mid then the recto line so that helps out a little. You may try the d-sonic . the mids on it have some bite but it can smooth out pretty good if not i'd say the steve and for sure the air norton neck with whatever bridge pickup you decide .
