Super Distortion, Tone Zone or other?

I'd like to replace the stock pickup on my '91 RG 570.
My style goes from '70s rock to metal.
Waht should I choose? Super Distortion, Tone Zone or some other option?

The other option is the Super3

I had a Super Distortion, and now have a Tone Zone in my 02 570. They are similar, but the Super Distortion is less "civilized"

i think the super3 is too modern, my persoanl favorite, but not classic enogh. i would recommend the breed, evo2, or super distortion. tamest to most agressive.

EVO2 man or tone zone, but I'd say Paf pro in the bridge isn't bad either.

What do you mean with "too modern"?
Super Distortion=agressive sounds good to me.

If we look at the tone chart of the JB, Super Distortion and Tone Zone, we have the following values:

Super Distortion: T-5.5;M-7.5;B-8
Tone Zone: T-5;M-8.5;B-8.5
JB: T-8;M-6;B-5

It seems the JB is more trebly than the other two or it's just the way each company evaluates the tonal characteristics?

the super3 is very focused and with high output. its brother, the super distortion, is more spread out though the frequency range. both sound great, but the SD is more open and has more broader appeal for more commercial styles. the S3 is a meaner sounding pickup with roughly the same output. tighter and with more focus for lead tones while retaining enough balls for a solid rhythm tone. not as much a chugga chugga type sound like the x2n or SD is capable of, but way more focused.

The JB does indeed have alot more treble than the Tone Zone or Super Distortion. The mids have a particular "twangy" character too, which people seem to either love or hate. The bass is smooth and tight.

It's a very versatile pickup, and useable for anything from clean country chicken picken' to heavily distorted thrash riffing.

Rock on!

My amp, jcm900, is on the bright side. Looks like the JB is not what I'm looking for.

i asssume different companies evaluate their tone differently.
But just look at the numbers like trebel compared to bass eg Jb. 8 and 5, if Dimarzio made the Jb they might come up with those close numbers too.

Re: Super Distortion, Tone Zone or other?

Yes, I think that each company has a slightly different tone, overall. However, the tonal chart tells you quite a bit and based on my experience with all three of these pickups, I think what has been described is correct. The Tone Zone and the Super Distortion are quite similar. The Super Distortion is slightly more aggressive than the Tone Zone, but not much. Both are more "throaty" or ballsy than the JB. You have to work slightly harder to get pinch harmonics out of the DiMarzios, though. Not necessarily a big deal. The other determining factor, however, is the wood on the guitar. Mahogony body guitar=JB is great! Alder or Maple body guitar=stay away from JB! Tone Zone is likely the best and most versatile pickup overall, of the three talked about. The best, though, is the Seymour Duncan PATB2
