tape behind pickup?

The previous owner must have put it on, theres a piece of electrical tape behind my single coil on my Ibanez Jem, it is covering the magnets from the back... what is it for?

Re: tape behind pickup?

It was probably an attempt to cut back on micophonic feedback as the electrical tape is some sort of insulator. No idea how effective it is though.

Hear hear!

you can sometimes get an electric-sounding click when your finger touches the polepiece on a pickup - perhaps this was happening and the previous owner assumed it was happening because the polepieces may have been touching the shielding paint in the cavity.....

.... otherwise I go with the bees too ..........
